Job Summary
The Coordinator I Therapeutic Recreation plans, organizes, implements, and delivers quality recreational activities for an assigned program to be held on campus or in the community. This includes recreation center oversight, risk management and safety.
Essential Job functions
Supervise and maintain safe and secure recreation center facilities including the gym, pool, playground, camp, or other play areas. Create and deliver recreation programs, activities, and team building initiatives that promote healthy leisure lifestyle choices, psychomotor skills, positive interpersonal skills, and the development of social skills. Ensure recreation activities and programs are consistent with agency mission, philosophy of service, goals, policies, and grant requirements. Monitor the effectiveness of individual and group activities as well as interventions, making modifications, as needed. Recognize and appropriately address aggressive behavior through approved interventions and de-escalation techniques, which may include the use of physical interventions (i.e. holds). Adhere to the recreation program budget and complete accurate expense records to ensure funds used to purchase supplies for activities comply with policies and practices. Develop and distribute recreation schedules for programs, special events, and activities in a timely manner and communicate any changes. Maintain involvement with all club or hobby groups, such as Bike Club, 4H, Plant Club, Arts & Crafts, and Girl and Boy Scouts. Develop, maintain, and retain all required documentation in a timely manner. Supervise youth as assigned. Actively participate in agency, team, and community meetings. While this job description covers many aspects of the role, employees may be required to perform other duties as assigned.Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Physical Education, or related field required Minimum 1 year of youth recreation experience in human services environment required$18.36 Minimum Rate per hour, $27.54 Maximum Rate per hour, based on experience.
Office of Mental Health (OMH) funded programs: Master’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation, or Recreation with an emphasis in therapeutic recreation with a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential required. Waiver may be obtained for designated period of time.
Special Requirements
CPR certification required or obtained within 60 days of hire. Unrestricted, valid NYS driver’s license for minimum of 1 year with a clean driving record and minimum insurance coverage that meets agency standards.
