The Washington Papers is a documentary editing project that publishes fully annotated volumes of the correspondence and diaries of George Washington and other Washington family members. The project currently seeks a detail-oriented copy editor to assist in every phase of preparing manuscripts for publication, including editing text for clarity, conciseness, and consistency of both substance and style; fact-checking; and performing other tasks as assigned by the project director. Remote and/or hybrid work is an option.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Master's Degree: English or Communications
Experience: Writing and editing
Preferred Requirements
Education: Master’s degree in History, or related discipline
Experience: Five years of experience in research and editing
Excellent knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Familiarity with Chicago Manual style and editorial procedures
Fluency in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel, Drupal, XML, computers, and the internet for research and communication
Ability to set and meet personal and project deadlines
Superlative ability to pay attention to detail.
Ability to work successfully and collegially in a small team and to learn new technical and editorial skills as required.
Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
