Position Summary:

Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Coral and Molecular Ecology Research Technician – HBOI campus - Ft. Pierce, FL

Summary of Responsibilities include:

Participate in field-related projects, which include scientific cruises, small vessel operations, and scientific diving.Responsible for sample processing, data entry, data/image analyses, and database management related to coral research projects.Assists with proposal, report, and/or publication writing.Performs molecular laboratory techniques, including extraction, amplification, sequencing, and analyses of DNA.Mentors interns and oversees students/technicians in the lab.Maintains a clean, well-organized, molecular lab and a safe workplace in compliance with the Harbor Branch/FAU safety program.Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization or high school diploma or equivalent and four years of laboratory or research experience required. College coursework in a natural or physical science may be substituted for the required experience on a year for year basis.

AAUS dive certification or the ability to complete AAUS certification within 3 months is required.

Florida Driver's license or the ability to retain one in 30 days is required.




Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology, Biology, Molecular Biology, Ecology, or a similar field. Master of Science with a thesis in a similar field.

Previous experience with molecular lab techniques that may include coursework in genetics or work experience in molecular biology.

Ability to work independently in a lab setting and oversee laboratory activities.

Excellent record-keeping and organization skills.

Proficient in computer skills with knowledge of various software (Excel, R, Access).

At least 2 years of previous research in coral reef biology or ecology.

Experience contributing to or writing reports and/or publications.

Salary:

$21.55 - $25.38 per hour.

Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Evenings and weekends as needed.
