Core Component Design Manager
TerraPower, LLC. is seeking a highly motivated Engineering Manager to manage engineering efforts of the Core Component Design (CCD) team and join the Core Design and Methods management team for the Natrium reactor project. This role will manage the Core Component Design group and focus on execution to assure technical adequacy in accordance with company, contract, and industry standards, with an emphasis on equipment design. The CCD Manager will support the Natrium Core Design system in functional-related matters, including technical support, training, staffing requirements and personnel performance. This people manager role is expected to allot ongoing and on-demand technical contribution that ensures appropriate performance of project(s) technical scope.
Responsibilities
Keep Core Design and Methods Senior Manager and engineering management informed of major emerging technical issues. Interface with regulators, stakeholders, and customers on discipline design issues. Support any complex analytical work to be performed and provide project support for the work. Assist in the continued development tools for the discipline. Recognize the need and recommend obtaining external subject matter experts. Ensure periodic meetings with discipline engineers to ensure appropriate communication of discipline and project information within project purview. Assist in developing the engineering staffing plan for the discipline using input from the project, including maintenance of load boards for discipline personnel. Assist in the recruitment, onboarding, and indoctrination of new discipline engineers within the CCD group. Recommend staff changes (replacements due to attrition, new requirements, de-staffing). Assist in resolving priority conflicts in conjunction with the projects when issues arise that compete for resources. Elevate those that cannot be resolved to the Senior Manager level. Support employee development through mentoring, training, and challenging assignments within the specific program engineering efforts as assigned. Assist in the development, maintenance, and use of discipline guidelines (e.g., design criteria, design guides, desktop instructions, design notes). Perform self-assessments of work processes and technical adequacy. Inspect and provide oversight of technical tasks deliverable within project and discipline areas or responsibility. Ensure that work process execution and technical adequacy within the group scope are in accordance with contract requirements, project standards, and industry standards. Demonstrate visible, continuous leadership in the areas of safety and quality. Identify improvement opportunities and cause work process changes to be initiated and expedited. Review and concur with technical content of PRs and subcontract packages prior to bid within project and discipline areas or responsibility within the CCD manager scope. Provide engineering review and concurrence for the procurement strategy for the select discipline commodities within the CCD manager’s scope. Mentor/coach less experienced engineers and dedicate time and efforts toward growing talents. Interface with GE-Hitachi’s design teams.
Accountabilities
Accountable to the Natrium Core Design and Methods Senior Manager for functional direction and to ensure that work is performed, and projects are designed, in a safe, reliable, and efficient manner in accordance with standard operating documents and all applicable laws, regulations, codes, standards, and technical requirements. Accountable to Natrium Core Design and Methods Senior Manager for implementing project design requirements and for ensuring project design is performed by trained and qualified engineers.
Authorities
Resolving interpretation issues for implementing design standards. Approve discipline specific guides, design criteria, and instructions. Approve written responses/presentations to external organizations that are applicable to the discipline. Coordinating with project stakeholders and allocating engineering staff to support work scope within the Engineering Manager's area of responsibility. Approve discipline specific engineering products/documents.
Key Qualifications and Skills
At least 6+ years of experience in the nuclear industry with a B.S. in Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering, or other relevant technical degree from an accredited university, or an M.S. or Ph.D. with commensurate experience. Experience in discipline field above strongly desired. Experience in the power industry or other highly regulated industries may be applicable. At least 2 years in a combined technical leadership role with ongoing requirement for performance of project technical scope, in addition to other manager responsibilities. Experience with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII and or Section III. Experience with Piping Design in accordance with standards such as ASME Code B31.1 or B31.3. CAD proficiency - 3,000 hours minimum - (SolidWorks preferred). Experience in FEA analysis – ANSYS, SW Simulation or ABAQUS a plus. Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing per (ASME Y14.5M). Ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently during a given work week. Excellent writing, presentation, and communication skills. Ability to work with minimum direction to solve challenging problems.
