Primary Purpose of Job: At Stantec, sustainability is built on the premise that positive economic results are possible when we effectively manage our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. Our sustainability commitments are integrated into how we operate our business and the services we offer our clients. Stantec’s Corporate Sustainability team covers a wide range of ESG-related topics related to the company’s sustainability performance. We have a robust program in place, complete with ambitious emission reduction commitments. We are looking for additional senior support due to increasing regulatory requirements. The Emissions Lead will be responsible for Stantec’s overall emissions management strategy and will oversee calculations of environmental data for inclusion in annual disclosures (such as our Sustainability Report and CDP disclosure). This leader will lead interactions with emissions-related frameworks and oversee our net zero strategy. While the primary focus is emissions, the position will also address other environmental management requirements. Successful candidates will have experience managing a corporate emissions management program and have a deep understanding of the GHG Protocol. The right candidate will have a passion to make a positive difference by finding business value in driving climate change action, encouraging social justice, and promoting ethical behaviors. Key Accountabilities: - Responsible for Stantec’s operational emissions management program, including strategic direction, calculations, reduction tracking, and reduction performance. - Oversee success of Stantec’s four phased net zero strategy. - Maintain carbon neutral program including the purchase of energy attribute certificates. - Actively look for and implement approaches that improve the quality of renewable energy purchases. - Interface with emissions-related frameworks such as Canada’s Net Zero Challenge, Science Based Target Initiative, ISO net zero standard, etc. - Lead annual third-party emissions verification process. Oversee interactions with internal audit and controls. - Oversee tracking of operational environmental reporting beyond emissions, including energy use, water use, waste consumption, and recycling performance. - Supervise (and actively support as necessary) data entry, management, and monitoring of ESG-related key performance indicators (KPIs) using Stantec’s environmental management software (third-party software and bespoke databases). - Develop strategies to initiate project emissions tracking. - Support the development of triple bottom line business cases for implementation of new environmental initiatives. - As needed, provide support to the wider Corporate Sustainability Team. - Undergraduate degree in environmental sustainability, climate change, or related fields. Graduate degree preferred. - 15+ years of industry experience with a focus on and personal passion for emissions management. - Deep understanding of the GHG Protocol and evolving frameworks that address emissions management. - First-hand knowledge of interactions with the Science Based Target Initiatives and their validation process. - Has prepared submissions under the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and can provide examples. - Basic understanding of the Canada Net Zero Challenge (self-taught acceptable). - Hands-on experience: - Managing a corporate carbon footprint - Maintaining intensity factors - Working in the CDP Portal - Comfort working with virtual teams over multiple time zones. - Detail orientated with an understanding of how the details connect to the ESG big picture. - High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Share Point. Working knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft products.
