Position: Chemist 1 - Cosmetic Product Development
Location: Carlstadt, NJ
The Chemist 1 will report into the Global Sun Chemical Color Material Development team, located in Carlstadt, NJ. The position is responsible for the continued assessment of effect pigment products in the innovation pipeline and competitive effect pigments and their use in cosmetic formulations. The Chemist 1 will work with various other teams, such as Research & Development (R&D), technical service, manufacturing, and will interact with cross functional global marketing and technical sales.
Key Responsibilities:
For new effect pigments in the Innovation pipeline, evaluate and determine value proposition, and communicate findings to research, development, process development, and marketing functions. Evaluate coloristic properties and application benefits of new pigments versus existing cosmetics effect pigments portfolio and relevant competitive products. Perform laboratory experiments relating to color cosmetic pigments and applications, including stability and compatibility analysis, bulk pigment evaluation, and solvent drawdown preparation. Formulation of cosmetic products, with emphasis on color cosmetics. Develop features and benefits to help determine portfolio positioning. Develop features and benefits package for new effect pigments prior to launch. Develop a strong understanding of effect pigments and color evaluation techniques. Demonstrate fundamental understanding of general chemistry concerning cosmetic raw ingredients. The Chemist 1 will need to be highly organized, capable of clearly documenting work in a laboratory notebook through technical reports, and comfortable with communication across multi-functional teams. Plans, designs and executes project work with clear interpretation of results and path forward. Develop new and optimize existing lab and instrumental procedures for the evaluation and/or analysis of effect pigments. Assess patentability of new effect pigments in various cosmetic formulations. Use of analytical and experimental data to analyze cause/effect relationships between various components of cosmetic and personal care materials. Organize results into reports or presentations that are presented within internal meetings. Maintain the cosmetics application laboratory. Maintain a safe work environment by following Sun Chemical Environmental Health and Safety policies.
Required Education and Experience:
Minimum BS/BA degree in Cosmetic Science, Chemistry or related field. Minimum 2 years of relevant laboratory or manufacturing experience. Working knowledge of chemical processes, cosmetic application, and cosmetic formula development. Working knowledge of computer skills (Microsoft office). Familiarity developing Standard Operating Procedures. Proficient in critical thinking and data analysis. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary and fast-paced environment. Ability to manage and deliver on several project deadlines concurrently while being a team player with a positive attitude.
Preferred Experience:
1 year of colorants and/or effect pigments experience.BENEFITS
