Costume Shop Supervisor

Job Description

SUMMARY: 

Reporting to the Chairperson of the Department of Theatre and Dance, the Costume Shop Supervisor is responsible for the organization and management of both professional and student personnel to ensure the timely completion of costume builds/procurement for our Theatre and Dance productions. A typical 14-week semester includes three mainstage productions, three studio productions, and various class-based projects. The Shop Supervisor, together with the Production Manager, coordinates with faculty, costume shop staff, professional and student designers, student employees, and student shop workers to make sure production timelines run smoothly and in-budget; and oversees the maintenance of all physical spaces used by the costuming area and manage the costume stock, including a robust external rental program.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead, manage, and supervise professional and student shop personnel, including any necessary craftspeople and overhire.

Create personnel schedules, shop schedules, and costume production schedules that ensure the timely completion of costumes and costume accessories.

Participate in regular team building, fostering a work environment of artistic excellence, community, equity, diversity, inclusion, and financial responsibility.

Cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment for student designers and student shop workers.

Collaborate with the design team and other production departments to establish methods for the design, construction, procurement or rental of all costume elements of productions.

Collaborate with designers and design faculty mentors, monitor the design progress of all costume elements so they can be built by the shop staff or vendors on time and within the allocated budget.

Prepare, organize, and communicate the design information so that shop workers can build costumes in a timely, safe, and resource-efficient manner.

Review/revise budget estimates for each production by tracking all relevant transactions and ensuring they align with the allocated budget and resources.

Attend regular production meetings and facilitate the communication of any issues that arise during the production process.

Collaborate with other departments to determine and implement archival systems about each production for future reference.

Develop and monitor costuming budgets per production and per season in consultation with the Production Manager.

Manage purchasing, including regular reconciling of departmental purchase cards.

Oversee spending in conjunction with the Faculty Costume Area Coordinator and Production Manager for supervised activities.

Manage external costume rental operation including stock pulls, dry cleaning, shipping, invoicing, contracts, pricing, and payment, in consultation with the Production Manager.

Oversee and maintain all physical spaces used by the costume production area, including workrooms, dressing rooms, and the costume storage room.

Monitor tool/supply needs and ensure materials are purchased in a timely and resource efficient manner and correctly allocated to various budgets in collaboration with costume shop staff.

Maintain an inventory of materials and a safe working environment for the shop employees so they may work safely and efficiently.

Manage and oversee the costume stock including regular inventory, organization, culling, and scheduling pulls for productions and class projects.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.

A minimum of three years of professional experience in costume technology in a costume shop environment.

Strong organizational, leadership, and management skills.

Ability and commitment to working with diverse groups in terms of gender expression, race, sexual orientation, religion, ability, age, class and immigrant status.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Experience in budget development and management.

PREFERRED:

Experience in student mentorship in an educational costume shop environment.

Experience leading a diverse team.

Understanding of costume and fashion history to make informed evaluations for production costume execution.

General understanding of current best health and safety practice within the US Theatre Industry.
