The School of Communication and Information seeks individuals to develop and teach courses in its new Masters Program and non-credit online Professional Certificate program in health communication and information.

These interdisciplinary programs will focus on how people, individually and collectively, understand and manage the role of communication, information, media, and technology in professional health care, and the communicative and informational determinants of health and wellness.

The programs will include instruction in the development and use of health-related and care-related messages and media, communication, information, and interaction in provider-patient contexts; the goals and strategies of health care promotion; relationships, roles, situations, and social structures in the context of health maintenance; designing communication and informational structures to manage health provision; applications to disease prevention and crisis communication preparedness; health advocacy, and communications concerning treatments; and creation, storage, retriveal, and management of information resources in the service of the health professions.

Topics of courses will include, as examples, health communication campaigns, interpersonal aspects of health communication, health sciences information, mediated health communication, patient-provider communication and health sciences information.

The school’s aim is to create a generation of professionals in government, research, and medicine who have a multidisciplinary perspective on how communication and information affect outcomes for illness and disease, and who are equipped with tools to facilitate effective advocacy for improving public health.
