About the Mathematics Department

The Mathematics Department is a large and vibrant academic department in the College of Arts and Sciences. The department manager’s position supervises an eight member staff which supports approximately 43 professorial faculty, 15 visiting faculty and continuing lecturers, and a PhD program with 75 graduate students.  The Department offers approximately 140 courses during the academic year with an enrollment of over 7,000 students from across the university. The Department operates with an annual budget of $18 million including $3 million annually in grants and contracts.

The Opportunity

The Course Support Coordinator provides specialized support to a variety of math courses and general administrative support to faculty, staff, and students in the department. Provides extensive course support including, but not limited to, initiating and maintaining online course information/updates in Canvas (course management system), course websites, Student Disability Services systems, Faculty Center; coordinates special needs cases (overtime/make up exams), academic integrity cases; coordinates exam/grading sessions, TA meetings, review sessions; administrative preparation of course materials, coordinates/tracks course logistics all while using a high degree of confidentiality and discretion.  Provides support for department events as needed.

This position is full-time at 39 hours per week and approximately 10 months of the year (approx. August 1 – May 31) and requires occasional evening and weekend hours for prelims and finals, and evening events. Complete applications received before 12/2/2024 will be prioritized for review and consideration. 

Key Responsibilities:

Semester Support- Using a high degree of confidentiality and discretion, responsible for student information, online resources, and department/university tools to manage day-to-day logistical support for courses. Adhering to FERPA regulations and Cornell policy access to student information policy. This support includes creating and updating course websites; providing enrollment support; creating, organizing, and maintaining course logistics and data; maintaining a variety of course calendars; stewardship with academic integrity cases; assistance with exams, grading, regrades, and other various course related items. 

Administrative and Course Coordination- proactively and independently prepare faculty and course staff with materials and resources needed prior to the start of the semester based on best practices developed in supporting course(s). This includes initiating, coordinating, and scheduling various meetings with faculty, TAs, CAs; providing faculty with class lists and photos, initiating Gradescope access for Tas; scheduling rooms for course activities; and ordering and distributing textbooks.

Event Coordination- Collaborate with the Event Coordinator to support department events, seminar series, and workshops. Assist in the coordination of meetings, rooms, materials, and food as needed related to events. Assist in organizing visitors with regards to travel arrangements, parking, dinner reservations, and meetings. Attending the departmental commencement ceremony.

Additional Responsibilities- Participate in projects or other duties as assigned with occasional work responsibility falling above or below current classification. Complete various and ongoing training, staying current with university policies.
