Summary About the Position: Operates a variety of heavy equipment, such as barge-mounted and truck-mounted boom cranes, forklifts and trucks to lift, transport and position materials and supplies for dredges and dams. Responsibilities Operates boom cranes in performing a variety of operations, requiring the use of all boom lengths and angles over a period of time and skill in performing difficult operations. Operates a diesel-electric, barge-mounted crane, 125-ton capacity, with a rotating 160-foot boom. Performs a variety of unusual crane operations demanding of the operator exceptional skill and expertise, such as the lifting and placing of miter gate leaves and lock bulkheads. Assignments frequently require operating equipment at maximum lifting capacity, use of unusual boom angles, and devising handling techniques for equipment not previously handled (such as special rigging and installation of special attachments). Must synchronize operations with unstable motion of floating plant in lowering equipment into exacting positions to preclude serious injury to workers in close restricted areas, and/or damage to expensive equipment. Operates Manitowoc crawler crane, positioned on a barge, diesel powered, 120 foot boom, lifting capacity approximately 100 tons, to load, unload, or move heavy and/or bulky items, such as engines, boats, and gear boxes. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Crane Operator without more than normal supervision. 1) Operating a mobile crane to pick up, position, and/or lower objects 2) Rigging objects to be lifted by a crane using rope slings, wire straps, hooks, or chain slings, and 3) Performing preventative maintenance on mobile cranes (or equivalent experience). - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element) Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) and Ability to Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) Operation of Motor Vehicles Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) PHYSICAL EFFORT Must make continual control changes to allow for unstable motion of floating plant and to work in close quarters. Exercises constant caution to avoid injury to other workers and equipment. Lifting up to 50 lbs. WORKING CONDITIONS Works outdoors in all types of weather. Exposed to unpleasant noise, heat, and fumes produced by the engines. Possibility of overturning in the crane due to frequent operating at maximum lifting capacity. Danger of drowning exists when working on or near the water. Employees live in various locations in Missouri and Illinois. Commuting times vary, but are generally no more than 45 minutes one way. Transportation subsidies are available for mass transit users.
