Critical Care Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant

UVA Culpeper Medical Center is seeking an experienced Critical Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our critical care team. Our hospital offers a progressive and innovative staffing model that empowers providers to maximize their clinical skills, supported by remote physician consultation. This position requires an autonomous practitioner who excels in critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving, as the sole functioning intensivist within the hospital.

Responsibilities:

- Collaborate with medical directors, administrative management, and interprofessional team members to facilitate patient care and management system-wide.

- Use independent judgment for patient assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of medical procedures, in line with UVA Health System credentials.

- Conduct comprehensive health histories, physical assessments, and initiate emergency treatments when necessary.

- Develop diagnoses, and identify and document health risk profiles, communicating effectively with the healthcare team.

- Order and interpret diagnostic studies such as X-rays and laboratory tests, consulting with peers when needed.

- Perform clinical procedures within the scope of practice and credentials.

- Prescribe medications and treatments following Virginia Prescriptive regulations.

- Initiate referrals to other healthcare providers and consult specialists as required.

- Assess patient responses to medical interventions, adapting care plans as necessary.

- Educate and support patients and their families, enhancing communication within the healthcare team.

- Participate select committees.

- Adhere to UVA Community Health policies, reporting necessary health information to legal authorities.

- Meet medical quality standards, serving on committees and participating in peer reviews as needed.

- Engage in the professional development of students and provide clinical resources across disciplines.

- Follow guidelines for accurate coding (CPT and ICD-10).

- Pursue continuous education and growth opportunities to enhance clinical practice.

- Perform additional duties commonly associated with licensed independent providers.

Required Procedures:

- Intubations

- Central and other advanced catheter insertions

- Dialysis and arterial catheters, chest tubes

- Paracenteses, thoracenteses, bronchoscopies, lumbar punctures

Qualifications:

- Education: Master’s degree from an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program.

- Experience: Established experience within critical care settings.

- Licensure: Eligible for licensure as an Advanced Practice Provider in Virginia. Nurse Practitioners must have a Registered Nurse license in Virginia. Maintain all necessary credentials as per UVA Health System and state requirements.

- Certifications: Current BLS, ACLS, and ENLS preferred 

Work Environment: 

Work in a rural hospital setting, managing a six-bed ICU with medical and surgical patients, and overseeing critical care services hospital-wide, including intermediate care and emergency department overflow.

Schedule:

Work six 12-hour shifts every two weeks, including possible day/night rotations and at least one weekend per month. A comprehensive 16-week orientation is provided.
