Gundersen Health System is looking for a fulltime Flight Paramedic to join our growing team working out of either our Decorah, IA or Sparta, WI base. While you will have a home base the expectation will be to work shift/pick up shifts at both bases. This dual role will have shared responsibilities as a Critical Care Paramedic with Gundersen Health System Ambulance with bases located at Tomah, Richland Center, Prairie du Chien (Wisconsin) and West Union, IA. Your home base(s) will be determined based on proximity.

What You'll Do:

As a Flight Paramedic, working in conjunction with the Flight Nurse and pilot in sharing patient care duties and operational responsibilities, you will function as an advanced trained paramedic able to provide critical care in the medical transport of critically ill and injured patients. The role requires an autonomous practice and the ability to follow and deliver care using existing medical protocols and critical thinking skills. In collaboration with the Flight Nurse, you will assess patient condition to determine nature and extent of illness or trauma; develop plan of care for the patient during the transfer; establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed; and incorporate knowledge of patient's physical and psychosocial development into planning intervention for quality patient care. You will demonstrate and utilize advanced trauma skills and lifesaving procedures such as intubation, needle decompression, surgical and needle cricothyrotomy, central and peripheral intravenous access and pericardiocentesis proficiency. You may also assist the pilot as requested inflight, operating and remaining proficient in advanced radio, navigation, NVG equipment, aviation map reading skills, plotting coordinates, as well as GPS operation.

As a Critical Care Paramedic on our ground Ambulance team, you will respond to emergent and non-emergent requests for emergency medical assistance in an Interfacility Transfer Service, for critical patients transported to a higher level of service and requiring care beyond that in the scope of a licensed paramedic, or when patient criticality meets criteria for air transport and air services are unavailable, operating under the guidance of local medical direction. You will demonstrate the ability to independently initiate and maintain medical procedures, medications, and evaluations beyond the scope of the paramedic while functioning as the sole practitioner in the ambulance setting. You must be able to operate and troubleshoot a ventilator, patient sedation, noninvasive position pressure ventilation, chest tube monitoring, and monitoring of central lines.

What's Available:

Fulltime, dual roles as a Critical Care Paramedic-Ambulance (0.6 FTE) and Flight Paramedic (0.6 FTE)

24-hour shift rotation, minimum of 48 hours per week

Flight Paramedic minimum starting pay of $26.55/hr and up, based on your years of experience

Critical Care Paramedic minimum starting pay of $24.94/hr and up, based on your years of experience

What You'll Need:  

High School Diploma or equivalency + completion of approved EMT-Paramedic course that utilizes the D.O.T. EMT-P course guidelines/Approved Critical Care Paramedic Program. Associate degree in a health-related field desired

Valid Wisconsin, Minnesota or Iowa driver’s license

3-4 years' work experience in the 911 arena as an EMT-Paramedic working as an Advanced Life Support Provider required

Minimum of 1-year Interfacility transport experience or Critical Care transport experience or air medical transportation is highly desired

National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (NREMT-P)

Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic - Wisconsin (EMT-P) & Minnesota (EMT-P MN) & Iowa Paramedic License (EMT-P IA)

Must have a critical care endorsement paramedic license in either Iowa or Wisconsin to begin employment, with critical care endorsement paramedic licenses in Iowa and Wisconsin required within 60 days of the hire date

Current Infant-Adult BLS for Health Care Providers from American Heart Association or American Red Cross 

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) & Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

Ability to function in an extended shift (24 hours or greater) environment and be able to constructively utilize down-time between responses or transfers.

Additional Education, Learning, Licensure, and Certification Required After Hire:

ICS 100, 200 and 700 certificates required within 60 days of hire

Certified Emergency Vehicle Operation (CEVO) within 60 days of hire

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required within 18 months of hire

Basic Life Support for Obstetrics (BLSO) or Advanced Life Support for Obstetrics (ALSO) within 18 months of hire

Transport Professional Advanced Trauma Course (TPATC) within 18 months of hire

Flight Paramedic Certified (FP-C) within 24 months of hire date
