As the “Regional Safety Engineer – Critical Project Implementation (CPI)” you will play a crucial role in shaping how we safely deliver some of the world's most advanced data center infrastructure.
In this role, you'll tactically support the Data Center Planning and Delivery organization, and the Critical Project Implementation team in the Health and Safety function. You will partner with teams such as Construction, Commissioning, Security, Data Center Operations and Procurement Teams to achieve health and safety goals and improve our safety culture. Externally, you will engage with General Contractors and AWS Suppliers to confirm/clarify the business expectations for H&S, and look for ways to continually improve H&S of our contracted services. You will work under the direction of the DCPD H&S team leaders within the assigned region (Americas, Europe Middle East Africa, or Asia Pacific/Japan China).
Key job responsibilities
You will influence program development, framework and strategy but will be responsible for deploying programs that cover H&S elements of leadership, planning, support, operational controls, continuous improvement, performance management, ensure the businesses are operating to jurisdictional requirements, and AWS Safety Management Program (SMP) requirements.
Examples:
• Deliver safety leadership programs that empower line managers to own and champion our safety culture through visible leadership and effective engagement in CPI.
• Drive safety excellence in CPI by deploying programs that embed safety into CPI scopes of work across the region, leveraging lessons learned across the goal.
• Partner with global team of H&S professionals to set CPI goals, strategic direction, continuous improvement mechanisms, and prioritize CPI H&S issues.
• Champion AWS's Serious Incident Risk (SIR) prevention strategy within the CPI scope of work in region to systematically identify, trend, assess, and mitigate high-consequence risks in the business.
• Develop and/or implement existing mechanisms that operationalize the AWS Construction Safety Management Program
• Deploy industry recognized H&S cultural assessments, and empower the business to action assessment results.
• Implement Procore H&S functionality within CPI operations.
• Develop CPI Global Minimum H&S Standards, that incorporate existing construction standards and operational safety policies
• Establish CPI H&S key performance indicators (leading/lagging) and metric output mechanisms
• Implement lessons learned processes to drive that develop competencies of line managers and health and safety professionals within region.
• Support and analyze operational controls and management processes required for safe project execution
• Support project managers in the execution of the H&S safety management system during the planning and execution of all phases of CPI projects.
• Ensures & monitors AWS vendors compliance to onboarding requirements in Avetta.
• Develop H&S kickoff standard work process to be scaled and delivered by project managers and performs reviews of AWS vendor’s safety management plans
• Manages 3rd party/internal H&S resources on CPI projects (weekly business reviews, monthly project reviews)
• Identifies improvement opportunities across project(s), and partners with Data Center Health and Safety (DCHS) Operational Team on project/region/global issues that impact CPI project delivery.
• Audits projects to the mental model ‘do you have a process, and are you following it?’ Serve as SME to project managers and support personnel in the auditing to the mental model share data (leading and lagging indicators) for trends, risks/opportunities and reports out at project/regional levels and within governance programs
• Conduct regular site visits with H&S 3rd party resources, project managers and Data Center Health and Safety Operational teams
A day in the life
You will use data and anecdotes to tactically drive internal customers to manage H&S risks, which includes being an escalation path for issue resolution and managing site-based H&S team members and/or consultants. You will apply your knowledge of the jurisdictional requirements, regional best practices, cultural norms, and location specific characteristics to improve DCPD activities in H&S by jumping in and showing the business “this is what the data is telling us, and this is how it is done” and develop DCPD competencies to enable them ownership of your solutions.
You must be an effective communicator, sending clear, concise and consistent messages verbally, in written form, and/or public speaking forums. You will play a key role in deploying mechanisms that manage H&S, while developing competencies and ownership of H&S in the business. You must have diplomacy, patience and tact to earn trust in relationships to effectively advise, instruct and challenge DCPD teams on H&S.
