Details Title Curriculum Fellow in Microbiology School Harvard Medical School Department/Area Microbiology Position Description The Harvard Medical School Curriculum Fellows Program ( HMS CFP ) is seeking applications for a Curriculum Fellow (CF) in Microbiology. Members of the Curriculum Fellows Program are early-career scientist-educators who focus on curriculum development, teaching, and educational programming in the biological and biomedical sciences. Fellows also receive mentorship, training in evidence-based teaching, career guidance, and dedicated time for scholarship/professional development to nurture their growth as educators and facilitate success across a range of education-focused careers. The Curriculum Fellow in Microbiologywill design, implement, and evaluate aspects of the graduate microbiology curriculum at Harvard, with a primary focus on the Harvard Graduate Program in Bacteriology (https://bacteriology.hms.harvard.edu/) (GPiB). The GPiB is an interdisciplinary graduate training program and close-knit community that brings together students and faculty from across Harvard Medical School and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. GPiB students participate in bacteriology-focused courses in their first and second years and continue to engage with the program through science, social, and professional/career development activities across all years of their graduate training. The Curriculum Fellow will serve as the point person for the program, supporting our trainees’ scientific growth, well-being, and career development. They will work independently as well as in collaboration with the GPiB Faculty Directors and Director of Education, administrative staff, and a student steering committee to lead and expand this innovative and rigorous program. The CF will report directly to and receive mentorship from Dr. David Rudner (GPiB Director), Dr. Deepali Ravel (GPiB Director of Education), and Dr. Aimee Hollander (Curriculum Fellows Program Director). The primary responsibilities of the Curriculum Fellow in Microbiology are expected to include: + Leading administration, curriculum innovation, and evaluation of the core team-taught GPiB courses, Micro201 (Molecular Biology of the Bacterial Cell) and Micro202 (Mechanisms of Bacterial Pathogenesis and Host Immune Response). + Providing course design input for other GPiB-affiliated courses (e.g. graduate microbiome courses, bacteria basics boot camp). + Teaching selected sessions in GPiB core or affiliated courses. + Serving as the point person for GPiB and interfacing with GPiB students, faculty, prospective GPiB students, alumni, and Harvard offices/committees focused on supporting graduate education. + Identifying instructors and providing course design input or administrative support for new nanocourses and workshops on emerging research tools or topics in bacteriology. + Designing and implementing para-curricular career and professional development initiatives to support growth of GPiB graduate students at all stages. These initiatives include science communication training and group advising discussions/workshops on preparing for key graduate school decisions and milestones. + Designing and organizing initiatives to build research and mentoring/advising connections between students, post-doctoral fellows, alumni, and faculty. These initiatives include an annual program retreat and student-faculty or student-alumni dinners. + Leading the GPiB student steering committee and collaborating with members to implement GPiB paracurricular activities. + Leading GPiB’s recruitment and outreach efforts (e.g. advertising, representing GPiB at an undergraduate research conference, providing pedagogical support to a SEA - PHAGES -based educational partnership with a neighboring Community College) + Managing program assessment including maintaining program records, analyzing data about GPiB student experiences and academic and career outcomes, and organizing annual external advisory committee meetings. + Managing GPiB communications (e.g. listserv management, website updates, and event and program advertising) + Preparing components of the GPiB NIH T32 training grant annual progress reports or renewal application + Developing new curricular or para-curricular initiatives and an education research/ SOTL project in areas relevant to the fellow’s interest and expertise. Additionally, the Microbiology Curriculum Fellow will have specific responsibilities to the CFP : + Take 2 required courses (e.g. Teaching 100: Theory and Science of Teaching, and Teaching 101: Integrating Education Research and Teaching Practice) + Participate in weekly CFP group meetings and pedagogical journal clubs. + Present at university-wide workshops on curricular and pedagogical topics. + Contribute to CFP -led educational initiatives (e.g. developing curriculum for the NIH -mandated Responsible Conduct of Science course, organizing the Graduate Science Education Series (https://curriculumfellows.hms.harvard.edu/graduate-science-education-series) ) Start Date: The ideal start date for this Curriculum Fellow is approximately June 1, 2025. This is an in person position and the candidate will be expected to work in person on the HMS campus in Boston, MA 4-5 days per week. Occasional evening attendance at student events may be required (typically 1-2 per month, to be scheduled by the CF in advance). The CF appointment is renewable annually for a maximum of three years and is non-tenure-track. Basic Qualifications Qualified candidates will be evaluated based upon their: + Experience or demonstrated interest in teaching or student career development/mentoring. + Experience or demonstrated interest in curriculum and/or program development and administration + Ability to manage multiple projects and balance competing priorities + Scientific background or interest in the GPiB curriculum’s current content areas (bacteria biology, host-pathogen interactions, and the microbiome) or future areas for growth (for example, the application of quantitative and bioinformatic approaches to bacteriology). + Commitment and experience or interest in supporting inclusive teaching and training in science. + Organizational and written and oral communication skills. + Demonstrated capacity for independence, perseverance, innovation, and the ability to work as part of a team Candidates are expected to have a Doctorate-level degree in Microbiology, Molecular and Cell Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or a related field by the time of appointment. Candidates who are currently finishing their doctoral work but have not yet graduated are welcome to apply.
