Organization Overview: The Goddard Riverside Community Center (Goddard Riverside) and the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center (Isaacs Center) are well-established Manhattan community-based agencies that support services to approximately 30,000 New Yorkers. We are two of New York City’s leading human services organizations meeting the needs of children, youth and families, homeless individuals, and older adults through-out Manhattan and New York City. The Isaacs Center focuses primarily on the needs of children and low-income families, out-of-school and out-of-work youth, and aging New Yorkers. We operate at community centers located in the neighborhoods of East Harlem and Yorkville, and seek to deliver programs that are impactful, innovative, and intergenerational.
Program Description:Goddard Riverside Community Center (GRCC), a well-established Manhattan community-based agency with an annual operating budget of $80 million, seeks a highly qualified Custodian to maintain our Early Childhood Centers which serve children in Head Start and Early Head start Classrooms.
Position Summary:The Custodian is responsible for keeping the physical environment clean and safe. They support the center in meeting and exceeding Head Start Program Performance Standards, DOHMH article 47 regulations. With a focus on cleaning, sanitizing, and storing chemicals. The position reports directly to the Program Directors.
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30am-7:00pm (Hours may vary)
Hourly Rate:$17.00-$19.00
Candidates must have the required qualifications to be considered for the position. The salary offer will be based on the candidate’s number of years experience in the exact or comparable position and additional preferred qualifications will be taken into account.
Roles, Responsibilities, and Essential Duties
Role, Responsibilities, and Essential Duties
+ Maintain the premises in a safe and clean manner
+ Open center (Front Door, Gates) and assure all doors are operable
+ Turn on air-conditioning or heat
+ Sweep/mop/vacuum floors
+ Dispose of trash, change trash liners throughout the center
+ Clean windows regularly
+ Sweep front of school
+ Minor repairs (fix cracks, paint touch ups, minor plumbing)
+ Check all safety materials (flashlights, alarms, EXIT signs, outlets)
+ Keep storage areas clean and free of litter and clutter
+ Coordinate service efforts of: Fire Safety (ACTIVE Fire), Heating System (Petro Fuel), and Inspections (Dept. of Health, NY Fire Dept.)
+ Conduct monthly fire drills
+ Assist in the cleaning of the kitchen (pantry area included)
+ Schedule regular maintenance of hood and vent, grease trap, fire extinguishers
+ Clean and maintain Air Conditioning filters
+ Assist Administration in planning for center renovations
+ Store cleaning supplies out of reach of the children
+ Maintain inventory and place orders
+ Order necessary cleaning supplies
+ Move furniture as needed
+ Participate in staff meetings and professional development
+ Regularly clean and maintain the playground space
+ Must update and maintain cleaning log
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
+ Experience in custodial work
+ Must undergo funder required background check and fingerprinting
+ Willing to obtain the S-95, F-01 and F-07
+ Must complete all funder required training requirements
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
+ Ability to read and write English
+ Ability to track inventory and place orders
+ Ability to make basic repairs (preferred)

+ Frequent standing, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs

This position is classified as a union position under the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Day Care Council of New York ("DCCNY") and Local 205, Community and Social Agency Employees Union, District Council 1707, A.F.S.C.M.E., A.F.L.C.I.O. ("Local 205"),. The union represents employees in the bargaining unit (i.e. Goddard employees in Local 205 union positions). The Collective Bargaining Agreement is a written contract that defines the agreed-upon terms and conditions of employment, including wage increases, paid time off and other benefits, and the grievance process. All employees in Local 205 union positions at Goddard Riverside are subject to and covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Membership in the union includes the collection of union dues on a monthly basis, to be deducted from the member’s Goddard paycheck at a rate to be determined by the union.
