Nature of Work
Performs custodial and janitorial work in the care and cleaning of buildings and facilities; use of proper methods, materials, and equipment in performing assigned duties.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Work is performed primarily in an internal work environment and may require occasional travel to other facilities with exposure to all weather and traffic conditions; frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals and contaminants, dust, fumes, noise, and vibration of electrical/mechanical equipment. Protective clothing and equipment is available and required.
PHYSICAL FACTORS
Moderately heavy physical requirements, frequent balancing, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, squatting, pushing/pulling, lifting, carrying, and reaching from all levels; carrying up to twenty-five (25) pounds; pushing/pulling up to one hundred fifty (150) pounds.
WORK SITUATION FACTORS
Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, and responding to customer issues. May also involve emergency situations, shiftwork, work on holidays, weekends, nights, and standby status. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.

This posting is part of an Evergreen recruitment. What is an Evergreen recruitment? A recruitment in which we need a larger volume of candidates to fill multiple vacancies across all City departments. It will be posted for an extended time, so that we can draw from the pool of applicants as needed.
This Evergreen recruitment may be utilized to fillcurrent and future Custodian vacancies in all City Departments to include full time, part time, temporary, and/or contract. This position may be posted again as the applicant pool is depleted or exhausted. The initial review of applications will occur on March 3, 2025, and periodically thereafter.

Duties and Responsibilities
+ Performs custodial and janitorial duties within assigned City buildings, empties trash cans, dusts and cleans offices, including dusting books, cabinets, shelves, and furniture and otherwise attending to the neatness and sanitation of buildings or equipment;
+ Scrubs, strips, mops, buffs, and waxes floors using scrubbing machine; washes windows and shampoos rugs using shampooing machine; uses cleaning fluids, chemicals and protective equipment to clean, sanitize, and deodorize break rooms, restrooms, and offices disinfects and cleans restrooms and showers.
+ Sweeps walkways and building entrances; picks up custodial supplies when necessary; may assist in moving office furniture and fixtures with proper equipment; performs general clean-up of grounds;
+ Operates power-driven machinery, such as automatic scrubbers, vacuum sweepers, carpet shampoo machines, and buffers.
+ May operate a City vehicle to pick up and deliver supplies.
Minimum Qualifications
Six (6) months of experience in janitorial or custodial work. Experience in operating heavy-duty floor scrubbing and carpet shampooing equipment may be preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATION(S)
Valid driver's license may be required for some positions. If applicable, position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Basic knowledge of: principles, practices, techniques, and procedures used to effectively perform custodial work, general maintenance, and upkeep of grounds and facilities; safe and effective use of related chemicals, supplies, materials, tools, and equipment; related occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, environmental and safety regulations, procedures, and practices; principles, techniques, and practices of effective and respectful customer service; principles of record keeping and records management; business and personal computers and related software applications; City organization, operations, policies and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.
Ability to: perform a variety of duties and responsibilities timely and with accuracy to meet deadlines and to ensure achievement of goals and objectives; adhere to all applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures related to the function of the position and department; use appropriate safety equipment and follow safety procedures; safely operate associated tools, equipment, and motor vehicles; detect needed repairs and make necessary operational adjustments on equipment; navigate across even and uneven surfaces; follow established procedures, and oral and written instructions; read, understand, and comply with a variety of specifications, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations governing related activities and functions; use sound judgment in decision-making with routine operations; communicate appropriately and effectively orally and in writing; compile applicable information, maintain accurate records, review documents and extract relevant information; establish and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with employees and the public; use initiative and independent judgment within existing procedural guidelines to successfully meet established goals and objectives.
Skills in: efficient and effective use of related equipment, tools, and techniques required to successfully perform the functions of the position; maintaining complete and accurate records; performing related reading, writing, and mathematical calculations; using independent judgment and personal initiative; operating a personal computer with installed generic and specialized software; assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, priorities, and demands.
