Position Summary

The Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Technologist (CVOR ST) is responsible for assisting the physician with advanced tasks during surgical procedures which include cardiopulmonary bypass/heart-lung machine use, cardiac assistive devices, and vascular access and interventions. The CVOR ST must be able to work under high pressure in a fast-paced environment. You will apply good interpersonal and communication process utilizing verbal and non-verbal skills to achieve organizational service goals of customer satisfaction and a positive work environment. The position requires the ability to be conscientious, organized, and orderly and the ability to respond quickly to the needs of the surgeon and patient.

Responsibilities

1. Prepares for surgical procedures by pulling appropriate instruments and supplies. Reviews case carts for correct instruments and supplies; ensures good working order of instruments. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and makes minor adjustments or calls biomedical equipment staff. Checks schedule and plans ahead for upcoming surgical case needs.

2. Anticipates the surgeon's needs. Scrubs and provides instruments, sutures, and other sterile supplies during surgical procedure. Passes instruments and retracts tissue.

3. Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout the procedure. Participates in counting sharps, instruments, and sponges. Prepares instruments for cleaning following each case. Disposes of sharps and trash appropriately in designated areas.

4. Ensures that all surgeon preference cards are accurate.

5. Assists with OR turnover between cases. Participates in stocking, replenishing supplies and cleaning operating rooms.

6. Participates in or leads the training and orientation of surgical staff and students, as assigned.

7. Follows safety procedures regarding medication labeling, appropriate handling of specimens, appropriate handling of sharps, time-out procedure, radiation and laser safety, infection control, assembling and disassembling instruments.

8. Is proficient to scrub on at least two surgical specialties.

Minimum education: Surgical technologist certification program

Preferred Education:

Minimum experience: 3-4 years of experience in a surgical technologist role

Preferred experience: 1 year in CVOR setting

Required licenses/certifications: Surgical technologist certification and Basic life support certification

Hours per week: 40 hours

On call requirement: STAR program

STAR Program Defined:

An employee in the STAR program is guaranteed 80 hours of regular pay. This is for 40 hours of work hours at the facility and for 80 hours of on-call shifts. Program participation consists of five 8-hr work shifts and five 16-hour on-call shifts per pay period. For example, each Monday through Friday in a pay period would either consist of on-site work 8-hour shift or a 16 hour on-call shift. Differentials will apply for hours worked only.
