Job Description
We are seeking a Cybersecurity Research Intern to join our team in Princeton, New Jersey. This role is ideal for a PhD student passionate about advancing autonomous cyber defense strategies and causal inference techniques. The ideal candidate will be instrumental in supporting research activities by working on state-of-the-art research to address challenges posed by sophisticated cyber threats like Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs).
This opportunity offers hands-on experience in applying cutting-edge methods, such as causal modeling and Monte Carlo tree search, to develop optimal defender strategies for network security. You will contribute to innovative projects in the areas of optimal decision-making, cybersecurity, machine learning, and causal inference. We leverage these techniques to enhance computational efficiency and decision-making in real-world cybersecurity scenarios.

This internship is an on-site position at our Princeton, NJ, USA office. Remote work is not available. Siemens offers interns a competitive salary, along with relocation and housing allowances. We also welcome international applicants seeking a J-1 visa (6-12 months).
The challenges and responsibilities Collaborate on results-driven research to develop state-of-the-art methods for defending networked systems against APTs using causal inference and optimization techniques.Explore and refine novel algorithms, such as C-POMCP, GNNs, and VGAEs, for improving autonomous defender strategies against benchmark scenarios like CybORG CAGE-2.Conduct novel research on causal modeling and optimal decision-making frameworks.Help integrate research outcomes into practical solutions for securing IT infrastructure, leveraging domain expertise and simulation tools.Collaborate closely with researchers and engineers across Siemens Foundational Technologies, the Siemens central research department, to align research objectives with real-world applications.Present findings in internal reviews and contribute to publications and/or patents.Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and ExperienceMust currently be enrolled full-time in a PhD program in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, computer science, or a related field.Strong theoretical foundation in causal inference, optimization, or reinforcement learning.Familiarity with cybersecurity concepts, such as intrusion detection, Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs), and network security.Experience with algorithms for Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs) or Monte Carlo tree search Problem-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to work on complex projects involving mathematical modeling and experimentation The ability to articulate complex technical ideas effectively Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, with experience using frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar toolsExcellent knowledge of English (spoken and written)Successful candidates must be able to work with controlled technology in accordance with US Export Control Law. Preferred Skills:

The pay range for this position is $32,550 - $55,800. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
