The Cytotechnologist evaluates all cytology specimens accurately and renders a preliminary diagnosis. Assists the pathologists in fine needle aspirations. Assumes responsibility for quality control, instrument maintenance, and safety of work area. Performs preparation work as necessary. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Licensure and/or Certification Must be licensed as a Cytotechnologist by the New York State Education Department. Total Education, Vocation Training & Experience + Associate or Baccalaureate degree in Cytotechnology or related science field or equivalent experience. Skills and Abilities 1. Category III - Job classification in which no employees have occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The position is located indoors under normal working conditions. Should be able to push/pull 25 lb., lift/move 15 lb. from floor to table, be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a key board, writing and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to sit at a computer terminal or work station for a prolonged period of time in addition to being able to squat, stand and walk for a reasonable length of time and distance. Sensory requirements include the ability to articulate and comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to read the English language. FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE STANDARDS AND RELATED MEASUREMENT CRITERIA: Performance Standards Measurement Criteria A Performs screening of cytology cases. 1. Renders accurate and efficient preliminary diagnosis. 2. Assumes the responsibility of reviewing previous cases and final reports according to established protocol. 3. Screens the entire slide on all specimens. B Performs and documents all quality control documents. 1. QC documents are accurate and complete 100% of the time. 2. Ensures that the identification of slides is correct 100% of the time by checking the slides and requisition forms. C Maintain a working supply of standards, controls, reagents and other materials necessary for the proper function of the department. 1 Supplies are adequate to produce lab results as requested by customers. Notifies supervisor when supplies are needed. D Maintain and update his/her knowledge of laboratory medicine as well as hospital policies, procedures and guidelines. 1 Attends continuing education programs thoughout the year. Attends hospital educational opportunities. E Assists department supervisor in various clerical and new employee orientation duties as well as other non-specified tasks. 1 Assists supervisor when requests are made. F Report to supervisor any equipment problems 1 Keeps supervisor informed of equipment issues G Follows section guidelines regarding signing out the negative gynecological smears. 1. Follows lab protocols 100% of the time. H Renders a preliminary diagnosis before submitting case to pathologists. 1. Works closely with pathologist on diagnosis of cases. I Organizes work to ensure turnaround times are met. 1. Turnaround times are met 90% of the time. J Assists in radiology guided aspirations and superficial aspirations. 1. Ensures that the aspiration cart is ready in advance of the final call for radiology guided FNA. 2. Pages or informs the pathologist regarding FNA procedure. 3. Labels the slides, smears the aspirated material, stains and coverslips the slides for the pathologist to do the microscopic evaluation. K Assumes the responsibility of cytology specimen processing as necessary. 1. Willingly performs preparation work as needed to make work flow through the department. I Performs other duties as assigned. 1 Willingly accepts additional tasks as assigned by supervisor to maintain the operation of the laboratory M Maintains Competency per department specific plans 1 Demonstrates competency on periodic competency assessments. Seeks additional training to insure competency. N Participates in Cytotechnology Proficiency Test Programs 1. Acceptable survey scores are obtained O Reports results using lab computer system 1. Accurately uses LIS to provide results for Pathologist review. P Ability to work independently 1. Works with minimal direction Q Assists with section QA program 1. Works with Pathologist and supervisor as needed R. Adheres to hospital policies and procedures related to: + Mandatory education + Annual health assessment + Licensure verification 1. Continuing education records will be completed and forwarded to Human Resources annually regarding mandatory educational requirements. 2. Complete annual health assessment form as required, maintains current inoculations. 3. Current license as required by N.Y. State will be forwarded to Human Resources upon renewal or issuance. Salary Range: $29.44-$44.16/hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
