Job Description Examines human body cells to detect evidence of cancer or other diseases. May draw blood from patients by venipuncture. Centrifuges blood specimens in test and capillary tubes to separate sediment and cells from blood serum. Categorizes slides and records classification and compiles listings of patients for follow-up analysis. Reports analysis of slides with unusual cell structures to pathologist. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Bachelor's degree, certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Cytotechnologist CT (ASCP), and 2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
