Summary:
Under general supervision of Program Director or Statistician but according to established polices and procedures operates minicomputer which may be linked to Hospital mainframe to display store and retrieve data gathered from research projects. Designs data entry programs for multi-site or multiple research projects. Integrates data design with longitudinal research studies. Creates analytical relational database and performs statistical analyses for multiple research studies and provides summary reports. Reviews results to detect and correct obvious errors; prepares and distributes reports as appropriate. Is responsible for maintaining equipment and recommending changes to existing software to improve quality of data analysis. Trains and oversees work of Research Assistants in database coding entry and cleaning of data.
Responsibilities:
Researches tests programs recommends computer software and hardware for suitability of department needs. Designs and creates systems using application development software preparing coding manuals and database structure manuals as needed. Provides database construction programs data entry modules manipulates multiple longitudinal relational databases and oversees all data analysis for study program. This may include multivariate data analysis and/or multi-site database creation.
According to needs identified by Program Director/Statistician accesses information and performs statistical analysis such as linear and logistic regression parametric and non-parametric analyses. Works closely with faculty to conduct and prepare statistical analyses for national and international conferences as well as for peer-reviewed publications.
Analyzes dataset to determine accuracy of data ensures elimination of data errors as appropriate. May categorize samples based on computer determination and familiarity with previous data. Organizes reports for faculty at scheduled research meetings. May prepare graphs and charts of research results for publications. Ensures data integrity consistency and accuracy across multiple studies through creation and implementation of data handling protocols/policies.
Maintains data files electronically by computer as well as manual files.
May be responsible for maintaining computer equipment arranging for internal/external service to effect repairs for maintenance. May recommend modifications to existing or development/purchase of new software to enhance quality of data analysis for entire program.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Bachelor�s Degree in computer science or closely related field (or in Psychology as appropriate) with 3 to 5 years experience in multivariate research databases or Master�s level with background in Research.
Demonstrated proficiency in mid-level programming applications such as SAS SPSS and/or relational database management software applications such as Access and/or FoxPro. Must also have proficiency in spreadsheet software applications such as Excel.
Organizational skills to gather research information format appropriately to facilitate data entry and to prepare and maintain records and reports.
Knowledge of and ability to operate minicomputer to display store and retrieve information and to program computerized statistical analyses.
Analytical skills to assess completeness quality and acceptability of data. Knowledge and working experience with relational databases and database structures.
Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with Hospital professionals to gather and clarify research data.
EXPERIENCE:
Three to five years experience in Research.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Performs independently within the department�s policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of the departmental policies and procedures is required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
No direct supervisory responsibility. Trains and oversees work of Research Assistants in database coding entry and cleaning of data.
