About the role

The Data Enablement Engineering team at Betterment sits at the intersection of the Product Analytics and Data Platform teams - serving as the domain and technical experts that translate business needs into beautiful data products. We own data cleanliness end-to-end, from extracting data from both internal and external sources to thoughtfully curating that data into easy-to-use and understand domains. Our work adds tremendous value to the business and we are looking for more thoughtful, driven, and curious people to push the business even further. 

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees. 

New York City: $125,000 - $153,000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus.  For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, weekly.

A day in the life Contribute to the technical vision and long-term strategy of the team, including contributing to new workflows for data science and big unstructured data Think about scale and new technologies that will enable us to achieve a high level of efficiency for our data platforms Be a key curator of data. You will build and maintain the analytics layer of our team’s data environment to make data standardized, easily accessible, and performant Work closely with Product Engineering and our stakeholders to ensure upstream product model changes integrate well with our data model—and when it doesn’t build the necessary capabilities to adjust Maintain and optimize monitoring and alerting for our company’s reporting pipelines and analytics infrastructure Integrate and productionize analyst and data science models Find ways to spread knowledge and increase data literacy across the organization What we’re looking for 3-5 years of experience writing SQL and transforming data, particularly in columnar databases such as Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, or Snowflake Experience with ETL, Python, and creating data pipelines Experience utilizing cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS Experience scaling self-service tools (e.g. Business Intelligence) and a willingness to commit to scaling and automating analytics work Ability to take apart business problems, translate them into technical requirements, and translate results / outcomes back to non-technical audiences Strong opinions about the ideal toolset to enable a high-functioning data team. Autonomy, curiosity, and tenacity as a data issue detective Previous exposure to DBT, Metabase, Airflow, Segment, and/or DAG management platforms What being at Betterment means for you

In the interview process, we’ll look to learn more about your skills, experiences, capabilities, and motivators. Many of our questions will be aimed at understanding how you might operate here at Betterment. Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete a case study exercise or technical assessments, as we want to collect a robust set of data points to better inform our decisions.

On average, it takes us around 3-5 weeks to make a hiring decision, depending on your availability and sense of urgency. As a best practice, we aim to interview at least 2-3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision. Please note that, as we usually receive an overwhelming number of  applications for open positions, we’re unable to offer individual feedback during the interview process.
