This opportunity is open to juniors, seniors, and graduate students pursuing a career in data management. This internship opportunity will provide the applicant with data management experience with progressive responsibility and experience. This will be in support of the various missions at the EROS (Earth Resources Observation and Science) Center (http://eros.usgs.gov/), located near Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Data Management interns will telecommute from campus with travel to the EROS Center as their schedule permits and as the project requires.
Core Responsibilities:
The Data Management Intern is responsible for Supporting data management activities across the data lifecycle.
Communicate and coordinate activities and technical status with your mentor, supervisor, Project Lead, and other Project team members, as appropriate.Ensure all data management activities are conducted in accordance with standards and best practices.Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite: This is essential for basic data manipulation and analysis in Excel.Database Management Systems: Familiarity with any SQL and experience with platforms like PostgreSQL is desired.Data Analysis: Basic understanding of statistical concepts and experience with tools like Tableau is a plus.Data Visualization: Ability to create clear and informative charts and graphs using tools like Tableau and Excel.Metadata: Basic understanding of metadata concepts, formats, and standards.Strong Attention to Detail: Data management requires accuracy and a keen eye for errors.Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify and address data quality issues and workflow inefficiencies.Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication to collaborate with team members and stakeholders.Curiosity and Learnability: Eagerness to learn new tools and technologies in the ever-evolving data landscape.Education: Working towards a bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Information Technology, Library Science, Computer Science, Math, or other applicable field of study.
Experience: 0-2 year’s related experience in data management, data analysis, or data visualization is desired. Experience with geographic data formats (Shapefile, KML, GeoJSON) is a plus.

Project Management Skills: Ability to independently manage small projects and timelines.PostgreSQL experienceKnowledge of the Data Life CycleExperience with metadata standards, such as Dublin Core, STAC, ISO 19115, or MARCExperience writing SQL queries to retrieve information from relational database systemsExperience with remote sensing, geographic information systems, and basic geography concepts such as map projectionsCandidates must have strong data knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a teamwork emphasis. Candidates must also be able to integrate into a highly skilled team.
The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for facility access and user accounts.
