Summary: Goldbelt Professional Services (GPS) is currently looking for a Data Scientist to work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at the Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics (CFA). The candidate will be expected to translate modeling and analytics into communication products and tools for multiple channels and audiences using plain language standards and clear communication best practices. The Data Scientist will report to GPS to ensure the execution of timely, high-quality deliverables for the client. Responsibilities Essential Job Functions: Collaborative Modeling Development and Application Work with staff to apply and interpret output from advanced analytic, computational, transmission-dynamic, and predictive modeling tools to support public health responses, including assisting implementation at state and local health departments. Quantitative Data Analysis Apply advanced skills in quantitative analysis, computer science, mathematics, and/or statistics to collect, organize, analyze, and interpret large and complex datasets, and make results available through dashboards and other tools. Qualitative analysis and evidence synthesis Develop qualitative analyses, such as risk assessments and scenario analyses, following standardized approaches and synthesizing a range of information, including epidemiological data, modeling studies, and Data Interpretation for Public Communication Interpret and translate scientific data into easily understood materials for a range of audiences and technical levels. Subject Matter Expertise in Infectious Disease Modeling Provide subject matter expertise in mathematical modeling for infectious disease tracking and forecasting, covering emerging and novel pathogens, including but not limited to COVID-19, influenza, monkeypox, polio, and Ebola. Qualifications Necessary Skills and Knowledge: Technical Skills: Expertise in statistical and mathematical modeling techniques, particularly in epidemiology. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R. Experience with data visualization and communication tools (e.g., R, Tableau, Power BI). Analytical Skills: Strong statistical and analytical skills, with the ability to apply complex mathematical modeling techniques to infectious disease data. Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience translating complex data for public audiences and policy inquiries. Problem-Solving: Ability to create and adapt innovative data science solutions to meet the evolving demands of public health response and decision-making Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Statistics, Public Health or related discipline. 2-4 years’ experience analyzing complex epidemiological data or developing infectious disease models. 2-4 years’ experience with R, C++, Python, SQL or related languages Background in science communication, health communication, or public health policy. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in public health data systems and familiarity with relevant disease surveillance platforms. Background in modeling tool development. Prior experience working with government health agencies at the federal or state/local level. Average salary is $140,000 annually.
