Job Title: Dean of Students
Position Summary:The Dean of Students is a critical role focused on fostering a positive, inclusive, and safe school environment that supports student success academically, socially, and emotionally. This role involves managing student behavior, promoting leadership, addressing student concerns, and ensuring adherence to school and state policies. The Dean of Students collaborates with staff, students, and families to uphold the school's mission and values. This position represents a unique opportunity to positively influence the lives of students while contributing to the Lynde School's broader mission of excellence and holistic student development.
Key Responsibilities:
Student Discipline:
+ Enforce school rules and disciplinary procedures in alignment with Gateway Longview and Lynde school policies and procedure.
+ Investigate behavioral incidents, implement restorative justice practices, and in collaboration with the Director and Principal recommend appropriate consequences.
+ Conduct disciplinary hearings and collaborate with the Director and Principal to resolve serious behavior issues.
+ Mediate student conflicts and support peer to peer resolution efforts utilizing restorative justice practices.
Student Support:
+ Monitor attendance and develop strategies to address absenteeism, tardiness and truancy.
+ Provide individual support for students facing academic, social, or emotional challenges.
+ Collaborate with school counselors, social workers, and external agencies to coordinate interventions and services.
+ In collaboration with the Director and Principal, utilize student data to actively participate in Student Support Team (SST) meetings to create and implement student success plans.
School Climate and Culture:
+ Lead initiatives and programs to promote an inclusive, respectful, and empathetic school culture.
+ Serve as a key communicator among students, parents, and staff to address concerns and celebrate successes.
Leadership and Collaboration:
+ Collaborate with school leadership to implement school wide initiatives, policies and improvement strategies.
+ Support teachers in managing classroom behaviors and addressing student academic and social needs.
+ Participate actively on leadership teams and provide input into school decision making.
Crisis Management:
+ Respond to emergencies, including safety drills, crisis interventions and critical student issues.
+ Act as the primary contact for student related incidents requiring collaboration with law enforcement or external agencies.
Core Competencies:
+ Strong understanding of state and local regulations regarding student discipline and welfare.
+ Ability to foster equity and inclusion within a diverse school community.
+ Ability to inspire and guide staff, students and families.
+ Proficiency in using technology to support data tracking and incidents.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Valid New York State certification as School Building Leader preferred
+ Master's degree in education, social work or related field
+ Proven experience in school leadership roles, preferably with student discipline and behavior management
