Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position is assigned to the Dental Program to perform chair-side assistance to the dentists as well as clerical functions that require independent judgement and decision making for the Dental Program.  This position requires close interaction between patients, dentists, and other dental staff.  The ability to communicate effectively and maintain professionalism and confidentially are key components of this position.  The assistant must be competent in assisting with preventive, therapeutic and surgical clinical procedures(i.e., dental prophylaxis, dental restorations, dental extractions.

Provides Direct Assistance to the Dentist

Greet and prepare patients for treatment.

Keep patients calm and comfortable.

Assist the dentist during examinations and treatments by handing them instruments and materials while keeping the patients mouth dry using suctioning devices.

Document treatment and notes in patients’ chart

Polish teeth

Give fluoride treatments.

Expose radiographs including bitewings and periapical.

Provide patient education and post treatment instructions.

Prepare tray setups for dental procedures.

Perform routine equipment maintenance.

Ensure accurate coding on Super Bills and in HMS

Lead Dental Assistant for submitting, recording, tracking, and receiving broken dental equipment to vendors for repair.

Lead Dental Assistant for ordering, tracking, receiving, and maintaining dental clinic supplies.

Responsible for tracking and updating sterilization procedures and processes ensuring they are followed according to state and local guidelines.

Responsible for monitoring and recording expiration dates on all applicable dental materials.

Train new Dental Assistants.

Performs Clerical Functions

Answer Telephones

Confirm dental appointments.

Schedule dental appointments

Verify Medicaid/Insurance

Provide back up clerical services to the front desk.

Billing Duties

Audit daily encounters

Review coding is correctly entered into HMS.

Initiates billing process by pulling CDT codes over and placing in unbilled status.

Miscellaneous Functions

Participates in staff meetings, trainings, in services and CEU trainings.

Maintains timely submission of EARS and timesheets.

Access to Social Security Data and Clinical information for services provided.

Back up School Based-Sealant Program ordering and clerical support.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge, skills, and abilities, include utilization of equipment required for the position. Principles and methods of sterilization; dental office procedure and principles of digital dental record keeping, including techniques used in dental radiography; and names or numbers of the teeth and various surfaces of the crown of the tooth. Ability to communicate effectively at a level required for successful job performance; identify the more common dental instruments, equipment, and materials, stand for long periods of time; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; follow directions; and maintain effective working relationships with health care professionals and others.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum –

Graduate of a dental assistant program approved by the Florida Board of Dentistry or accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental accreditation. Expanded Functions Florida Dental Radiology Certification CPR Certification Florida Department of Health is required to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs shelter or performing other emergency duties including but not limited to, response to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster man-made or natural.

Preferred –

One or more years’ experience as a dental assistant. Bilingual in Spanish is highly preferred.
