Dental Assistant

Position Summary

Under close supervision, the Dental Assistant supports the Dentist’s in the performance of all dental procedures on patients. Takes and develops x-rays, sets up operatory with necessary materials and equipment for daily procedures. Performs related duties as required, maintains logs, inventory, infection control standards and escorts patients.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:

1. Appropriately hands dental instruments to dentist during treatment of patients.

2. Arranges operating area with all necessary supplies and equipment.

3. Maintains inventory list of supplies and instruments and places orders via School Health system.

4. Completes x-rays ordered by dentist.

5. Maintains sanitary conditions of all operatory and clean and soiled areas.

6. Ensures appropriate sterility and quality control are maintained in autoclaving and preparing sterile solutions.

7. Maintains equipment in clean working order and retains copies of preventive maintenance and quality control.

8. Follows up with patients’ appointments as directed.

9. Assists in escorting patients to clinic.

10. Attends all departmental meetings.

11. Neat, clean, proper attire, professional uniform as per policy.

12. Treat all co-workers with respect and work with them in a spirit of cooperation.

13. Assist with orientation/procedures for new dental associates.

14. Retracts patients mouth and operates suction equipment to maintain mouth free of secretions.

Education & Experience Requirements

High School Diploma/GED required Dental Assistant Certificate required Knowledge of dental terminology, methods of sterilization, chair side assisting, laboratory techniques and dental x-ray techniques.

Core Competencies

Knowledge of principles and procedures related to dental office work Follows universal precautions and adheres to infection control protocols. Knowledge of aseptic techniques and ability to sterilize equipment Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to operate standard office equipment Ensure equipment used is appropriate for the age and size of the mouth and of the individual is utilized. Maintains inventory of supplies and prepares requests for items so that unit functions efficiently.

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment

May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospitals SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be access through the hospitals Intranet site (Employee Tools / SDS Access). A copy of the SDS database can be found at the hospitals switchboard, saved on a disc Ability to remain in stationary position 90% of the time Must be able to work in an environment with continuous interruptions Ability to communicate with patients, families, and hospital employees on telephone and using email.
