Pay Range
$172,140 - $265,188 Annually
$172,140 - $221,064 Annually for the SEL.3 level
$206,490 - $265,188 Annually for the SEL.4 level

Job DescriptionWe have an opening for a Deputy Associate Program Leader in the Nuclear Materials Program for Surveillance, Fabrication and Offsite Operations. You will provide leadership for a team that performs machining, inspection, and assembly operations in the LLNL Superblock nuclear facility and additionally at Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). You will also lead the team in developing and implementing next-generation nuclear materials manufacturing equipment and processes for LLNL programs. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), in support of the Nuclear Materials (NM) Program within the Strategic Deterrence (SD) Principal Directorate.
Depending on your assignment, this position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
Lead the development, management, and execution of work for Nuclear Materials programmatic projects, providing guidance to ensure the science and technical efficacy of the group, while also supporting the accomplishment of project/program goals and objectives. Provide technical, safety, and security leadership to a diverse set of manufacturing operations within the Superblock and NNSS, ensuring team compliance with all safety and operational standards, while also making certain that safety related Laboratory and Directorate policies are understood, applied, and followed.Monitor performance required to meet programmatic milestones and deliverables, communicate program requirements in an effective and timely manner, respond to unexpected operational setbacks, and lead and advise on corrective actions when necessary.Collaborate with Nuclear Materials Technology Program (NMTP) programmatic engineers and project principals in defining work objectives, conducting comprehensive and complex design reviews, and in providing expert technical engineering and electrical support and analysis while applying advanced knowledge and using innovative methods/technology where applicable.Represent the program alongside the Associate Program Leader in developing budgets, tracking costs and market capabilities, communicating with various stakeholders internal and external to the laboratory, while ensuring desired results and deadlines are met.Guide workload planning for multiple projects among group members, assigning work and remaining cognizant of the complex technical goals, problems, solutions, and progress of group projects.Interact with program engineers and scientists, DOE staff, operations personnel, and with mid-level management outside and within the LaboratoryTravel up to 50% time to LANL and NNSS to oversee and coordinate LLNL activities.Perform other duties as assigned.Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level
Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers, including making recommendations and providing strategic technical advice.May develop new ideas, modify approaches, and/or redefine requirements that impact organizational operations or directions.Mentor staff across the organization, including other mentors.Serve as subject matter expert and organizational spokesperson to Laboratory management and/or external advisor to sponsors.Develop innovative concepts and provide expert leadership and technical vision in glovebox application development areas.Brief and advise senior management and program sponsors on strategic approaches, programmatic considerations, and overall impacts. Qualifications Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenshipBachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.Advanced knowledge of and significant skills, abilities, and experience with the theory, design, and application of management practices to resolve complex technical engineering problems.Advanced leadership and team-building skills, including mature judgment, and the demonstrated ability to approach and resolve difficult issues using creative and innovative problem-solving skills and decision-making techniques.Advanced verbal and written communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams, to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, to promote and maintain productive relationships across programs and directorates, to present and explain technical information to all levels internal and external to the Laboratory, and to handle sensitive and confidential issues with tact and discretion.Significant experience in engineering project leadership, including work planning, scheduling, cost estimating and reporting, and analyzing and managing a budget.Working knowledge of applicable Department of Energy orders, national codes, and standards.Additional qualifications at the SEL.4 level
Expert knowledge of and extensive experience with engineering analysis and hardware design, fabrication, and testing processes, and deployment of cutting-edge technologies.Extensive experience in the leadership of technical projects, project planning, and execution.Expert communication, facilitation, interpersonal, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management, external sponsors, and/or key stakeholders.Extensive experience and expert technical knowledge to address technological advancements that may have impact beyond the Laboratory.Experience mentoring staff across the organization, including other mentors.Qualifications We Desire
Master’s Degree or PhD in engineering or a physical science, or related field.Significant experience working with plutonium, nuclear facilities, or a highly regulated radiological field to design systems and operations with rigorous work control process.Experience in handling fissile materials in gloveboxes.Experience in materials processing and applications.
