Deputy Chief Engineer

Leidos Hypersonics Division is seeking a qualified Deputy Chief Engineer – Mechanical Systems to support the Common Hypersonic Glide Body. With offices across the United States engaging in the defense, space, cyber and commercial fields, Leidos provides responsive, cost-effective engineering, scientific and IT solutions. Leidos is involved in multiple contracts to provide hardware and systems for high energy weapons, launchers, hypersonics, and target surrogates for several DoD customers.

Primary Responsibilities

The Deputy Chief Engineer – Mechanical Systems will support the Chief Engineer for several aspects of the engineering and flawless program execution to include:

Balance technical risk with cost and schedule risk to ensure executable yet technically sound deliverablesProvide independent oversight across all mechanical systems to ensure overall technical compliance to the Technical Data Package (TDP)Act as the independent technical authority and be responsible for the technical baseline for mechanical systemsAssess and approve technical completion and compliance at major program and subsystem technical reviewsProvide engineering leadership and mentoring to coordinate design, analysis, and systems engineering processes throughout development, verification, delivery, and operationCollaborate with engineering leadership to assess and carry out engineering process health and compliance with standards and procedures for product / programRepresent Leidos and the program with key customers and partnersMechanical Engineering resource and talent planningDevelopment and mentoring of engineering staff to include providing career guidance and professional growth opportunities for high potential employees

Basic Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent field from an ABET accredited school is required. Candidate should have 12 years of relevant experience.

Candidate must be a resident of the North Alabama area or willing to relocate to the Huntsville - North Alabama, AL area.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following skills/abilities are required:

Expert knowledge of Technical Data Packages (TDP) developmentExperience in requirements definition, design, development and test of hardware systemsExperience in management of hardware design teams to include developing integrated master schedules, and planning required to execute small to large sized programsMust have a working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and TolerancingA background in DoD programs is required. Candidates must have good organizational skills and attention to detail, and work well in a team environmentExperience with Creo Elements/Pro (formerly Pro/ENGINEER)Knowledge of missile mechanical structural systems including cast, forged and
machined partsExperience with environmental testing of missile components and related test equipmentExperience with compatible materials, fasteners, coatings, processes and assembly methodsKnowledge of ASME drawing standardsOrganizational skills to document designsExperience managing a team of engineersMust have experience supporting business development through marketing and generating proposalsTechnical leadership of weapon system and architecture development tasksProject or people managementProposal writing or business developmentProject estimatingUnderstanding of Systems Engineering processesTest planningCONOP development for assembly, integration and testing of hardwareThe ideal candidate would have experience related to design and or test of missile structural components and have a current DoD Secret clearance.Original Posting Date:2025-01-13

Pay Range:Pay Range $126,100.00 - $227,950.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
