Job Summary
The Deputy Sheriff performs varied first-level law enforcement duties involving the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, the maintenance of order, and the investigation of crime for the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office [herein referred to as Agency]. This position is generally under the direction and general supervision of a patrol corporal and/or sergeant, but may, at times, work independently. Incumbents will be required to work varying hours and/or shifts.
Employees of the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office hold positions of high public trust. It is imperative that all employees conduct themselves, both on and off-duty, in such a manner which does not bring disrepute upon the Agency or the professional image of law enforcement.

TOTAL COMPENSATION: $79,824.38 - $122,423.50 annually. Total compensation is an estimate based upon base compensation, median retirement fund contributions, and current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates (including medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability, and leave). The actual total will vary depending upon each employee's enrollment choices.
Intermediate Lateral salaries will be determined by their years of service with their previous law enforcement agency, with the lowest step starting pay at $29.98 on the pay scale and maxing out at the top step of the pay scale.

Spokane County Sheriff's Office Incentives:
Deputy Sheriff - Intermediate Lateral SIGN-ON BONUS AVAILABLE
(Effective until 06/30/2025)
The Spokane County Sheriff's Office is proud to offer a sign-on bonus of up to $25,000 to newly hired Deputy Sheriff - Intermediate Laterals. The sign-on bonus does not apply to current Spokane County employees. *All sign-on bonuses must be given approval by the Spokane County HR Director prior to issuance.
The payout schedule is as follows: $10,000 of the bonus will be paid on the first regularly scheduled payday after the applicant becomes an employee of Spokane County. Upon completion of the one-year probation as a Deputy Sheriff, the remaining amount will be paid at an amount of 1/24th for the following 24 months of employment, so long as the employee remains in active status.
The Spokane County Sheriff's Office offers an education incentive. This incentive is paid in addition to the monthly salary.

The Spokane County Sheriff's Office employees are not required to live within Spokane County limits.

Examples of Duties
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as an exclusive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, but only as a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent may not be required to perform all duties and may be required to perform additional, position specific duties.
Patrol a designated area of Spokane County in a patrol car, on a bicycle, boat, and/or on foot to deter and discover crime, conduct on-scene investigations at crime scenes, aid persons in trouble, and render other public services, as needed.
Enforce traffic and parking ordinances; investigate accidents; operate a radar unit to discover speed violations; issue citations to violators; serve warrants of arrest, arrest persons, and secure their custody; complete necessary reports concerning alleged crimes, circumstances of arrest, evidence discovered, and witness interactions.
Serve civil processes, including writs of attachment, writs of restitution, and writs of execution; conduct address checks on registered sex offenders; document attempts and other pertinent information.
Respond to reports of possible crime and take action as the situation requires to secure the scene; interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; gather evidence, locate, interview, and arrest suspects; investigate persons suspected of being engaged in crime; locate and secure evidence pertaining to alleged crime; arrest suspects based on a probable cause standard.
Report to scenes of accidents; administer first aid and summon aid and other patrol units for assistance in treating injured persons and controlling the scene; make general drawings of accident scenes; complete standard accident reports; make arrests as the situation warrants.
Provide information to the public concerning laws and ordinances.
Conduct thorough investigations of reported crimes appropriate to their assignments; use photo montages for victim and/or witness identification; conduct necessary searches and follow up on investigations as necessary; prepare cases for prosecution.
Develop community contacts to obtain information about crimes and issues affecting assigned district; maintain contact with the public to promote the community policing philosophy of the Agency.
Complete additional investigations as determined necessary by prosecution; be prepared when interviewed by the defense or other investigators regarding investigations; testify in court.
Respond to potentially violent events where a physical encounter may occur and/or where citizens may become violent towards the responding officer, which may necessitate the use of force.
Perform specialized duties, which may vary and at times with limited supervision, depending on an individual deputy’s background, ability, and the needs of the Agency, or as required or assigned.
Assist with on-the-job training and education of external agency peers, coworkers, and supervisors; instruct in-service or specialty training sessions in specialized discipline, such as criminal procedures, reality-based training, defensive tactics, firearms, emergency vehicle operations, etc.
Report for duty on time and work overtime, as directed; attend training and roll calls, as directed; apply job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities on duty.
Maintain personal hygiene and appearance in a manner that projects a professional image appropriate for the Agency and assignment in accordance with Agency policy.
Check voicemail and e-mail regularly and remain in contact with Agency communications, County employees, partner organizations, and the general public.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Must be a citizen of the United States, a lawful permanent resident, or a deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) recipient; must be able to speak, read, and write the English language; high school diploma or GED.
Applicant must be a minimum age of 21 at the time of appointment, however, may test at age 20, as long as applicant turns 21 during the life of the eligibility list.
A driver’s license is required at the time of application and must be retained throughout employment.
In addition to these general qualifications, the following shall be requirements for an individual to be eligible to test for placement on the eligible list for Deputy Sheriff-Intermediate Lateral:
The Deputy Sheriff-Intermediate Lateral must have successfully completed a basic law enforcement academy in the United States. Experience as a deputy is not required. If not currently working in law enforcement, applicant must have either graduated from a basic law enforcement academy in the United States within the last two (2) years (this includes self-sponsored academy individuals) or have been separated from their previous law enforcement agency for less than two (2) years. Applicant must have either successfully completed the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy or have the ability to obtain an equivalency certification prior to the completion of probation. (Min. 10-9-18, 5-11-21; 5-10-22; 11-8-22)
WORKING CONDITIONS (include but are not limited to):
Must be able to effectively, efficiently, and safely work in the following environments:
+ Work in a 24-hour/seven day-a-week operation; this includes working day/night shifts, weekends, holidays, and/or overtime, as required
+ Variety of weather conditions
+ Variety of schedules including 8, 10, and 12-hour shifts
+ Work in emergency situations that may be physically demanding for long periods of time; assure the delivery of and participate in administering emergency medical aid, evacuations, and rescue of individuals from harm in potentially dangerous situations
+ Hazardous conditions where employees must wear a variety of protective masks and/or eye protection for extended periods of time
+ Situations where blood, bodily fluids, and/or other potentially infectious and hazardous materials are present

PAID TIME OFF
Spokane County Observed Holidays
Up to 10 (ten) paid holidays are observed by Spokane County.
PTO
Non-represented and a select group of represented employees receive a bank of hours that combine both vacation and sick leave into a paid time off bank. There is no waiting period to use this time and it starts out at almost 2 days per month accrual increasing in accrual rates annually for first 5 years.
Vacation
For employees with less than five (5) years of continuous service, the accrual rate is 1 day of vacation each month for a total of 12 days per year. After six (6) months, employees are eligible to take accumulated vacation time. (Please note the vacation time accumulation may vary depending on contract language).
Sick Leave
Sick leave is earned at 1 day per month and can be taken as the days are accumulated.
Other Leaves
Spokane County provides several other paid leaves such as: bereavement leave, jury duty and military duty leave.
INSURANCE BENEFITS
Medical Insurance
Two plans are currently available: Premera Blue Cross (PPO) and Kaiser Permanente (HMO). Spokane County pays 95% of the premium for full-time employees and 90% of the premiums for spouses and dependents. Premiums are deducted each pay period (pay periods: 15th and last day of the month).

Group Life Insurance
The County provides a $25,000 group life insurance policy to employees. The County provides a $10,000 benefit for those represented by 492, 492CS & 492CL. This benefit is paid in full by Spokane County.
Long Term Disability Coverage
Provides an income protection benefit in the event of a long-term illness or injury at rate of 60% of income up to a maximum of $5,000 per month. Spokane County pays the full premium for this plan. Deputy Sheriff's receive a benefit through their union for disability.
RETIREMENT
Retirement Plan (401a)
Spokane County employees are automatically included in the Washington State Retirement System. Both the employer and the employee contribute to the plan. This retirement plan provides a guaranteed lifetime monthly benefit once vested and eligible for retirement.
Additional Retirement Plan Option (457b)
Employees may supplement their retirement income and save money on taxes by participating in this optional County program. Roth (after-tax) option is also available through this retirement plan.
VOLUNTARY BENEFITS
AFLAC
Supplemental insurance is optional and is provided by AFLAC to help pay for benefits not covered by major medical insurance. The employee pays 100% of the premium.
Travel Assistance
Provides additional travel protections anytime you travel more than 100 miles from home. Includes pre-trip information, emergency ticket replacement, and emergency evacuation coverage. This benefit is paid in full by Spokane County.
Flexible Spending Plan (FSA)
Spokane County sponsors a Section 125 Flexible Spending Account to allow out-of-pocket Medical & Daycare Expenses to be paid with Tax Free Dollars. Premiums are automatically set up pre-tax under the FSA.
Voluntary Term Life Insurance
Voluntary Term Life Insurance is additional optional life insurance provided through The Standard Insurance. New employees are guaranteed up to $50,000 for self and $20,000 for a spouse with no medical underwriting needed.

Employee Assistance Program
Employees and their family members are eligible to receive free counseling. There are also benefits relating to financial and legal concerns.
