About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for an Installation Design Engineer to join our Utilities Engineering Design Team, which is responsible for the design and installation of High Voltage Cable systems for a diverse range of clients. Applications are welcome from recent qualified graduates in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related subject. A training programme will be tailored to suit the individual with a progression route for their engineering career progression within the team.

The Engineering Design Team forms part of our High Voltage Business, providing customers with a diverse range of services, from the supply of cable, to the provision of jointing services through to full turn-key installation projects. This role will work closely with internal customers, including the bid team, projects and Energy Network Solutions (maintenance and repairs) teams.

The Design Team are a key contributor to the success of the business, and the successful individual will work, on developing effective, safe, cost-efficient designs solutions for tenders/projects, liaising closely with site engineers to ensure the project is delivered to the required specification, mitigating risks and resolve any unforeseen design issues as the work progresses.

This is an interesting and diverse role which draws on aspects of mechanical, civil and electrical engineering, supporting projects from initial bid, through project execution to final testing and handover.

Responsibilities

Understanding Customer Requirements and relevant specifications/standards

Defining Scope

Risk assessment and mitigation

Design Calculations (cable thrust, cable pulling tension etc.)

Analysis of route survey data and cable route Planning

Interpreting System Design requirements to develop installation layouts (trenches, terminations, joint bays etc)

Developing design solutions for Special Engineering Difficulties (river, rail crossings etc)

Produce 3D models/drawings to define design requirements

Compiling Project Engineering Design Packs for Site Teams

Attending regular site meetings, developing excellent communication channels and maximising collaboration to monitor progress, improve designs and identify/resolve issues

Optimising Design Workflows

Qualifications & Requirements

Applications are welcome from recent qualified graduates in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related subject. A training programme will be tailored to suit the individual with a progression route for their engineering career progression within the team

Attention to detail with a view to the larger overall scheme design

Ability to read technical specifications

Good mathematical skills

Computer design skills – use of 2D and 3D CAD Programs

The ability to follow procedures and structured, systematic approach

Good written communication

Presentation skills

Team work – interface with a range of disciplines, meeting participation

Ability to see the overall picture – e.g. cost/options/compliance/practicality/customer awareness
