Design Engineer
Job Description The primary responsibility of the Design Engineer position is to handle permit review processes to enforce CDWM policies regarding impact to Citys water facilities. Including: - Review of proposed construction plans from other agencies, utilities, developers, etc., for impacts to the City of Chicagos water facilities and, if necessary design for modification of existing water facilities. The Design Engineer will be the central point of communication between CDWM and CHI-DWM staff with regard to permit review and resolution of technical issues related to design of related facilities. Since a significant portion of the position involves communication with internal and external team members and stakeholders, excellent written and verbal communication skills are critical to success. Additionally, the position requires a high level of organizational ability to simultaneously handle, maintain documentation for, and report status on several active and pending projects. Review Existing Facility Protection (EFP) issued by the City of Chicago Office of Underground Coordination (OUC) on behalf of DWM. Examine/review proposed plans for impacts to Department of Water Management facilities Enforce Department of Water Management standards to maintain separation requirement of water distribution facilities and proposed utilities Design and produce construction documents for adjustments of water distribution facilities Address DWM - Bureau of Engineering Services requests for information on existing facilities and on projects by other agencies Ability to organize project documentation Assist with project status tracking in PMIS database/systems Reviews contractor/consultant design plans for impacts to DWM water distribution facilities. Develops estimates for Force account construction and inspection services. Skills and Requirements Bachelor's degree from an accredited program in Civil, Environmental, or a related engineering field.  A minimum of 4-7 years of experience in the field  Experience with underground utilities installation and/or water/wastewater treatment plant construction  Excellent organizational, communication, computer, and technical writing skills.  Experience in infrastructure design, preparation of design plans and specifications, cost estimating, scheduling, permitting, and construction.  Strong background and experience in water treatment projects, including designing floor plans, process flow, and providing general design work and review with the aid of a team.  Ability to provide technical solutions for water projects and collaborate with CAD teams for design implementation.  Proficiency in software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Civil3D, and Microsoft 365 tools including Excel, PowerPoint, and Docs.  Ability to review designs and ensure they meet technical standards for stamping.  Experience or ability to mentor junior engineers  Strong work ethic with excellent organizational, communication, computer, and technical writing skills  Strong team building and communication skills PMP or CAPM certification  Engineer in Training (EIT) and ability to obtain PE null We are a company committed to creating diverse and inclusive environments where people can bring their full, authentic selves to work every day.
