Arup’s Rail skills encompass and delivery a huge array of services across the project life cycle from Project inception, Feasibility studies, System design, Detail design, Design & build, Asset management, Environmental assessment, Implementation & commissioning, Operation & Maintenance (O&M), Strategic advice & management, public engagement support and Digital Rail.
Our rail experience spans a variety of modes such as High speed, Heavy rail & Suburban, Metro and Mass transit, Light rail, Automated people movers as well as Heavy haul freight. Our regional offices contain talented, multidisciplinary teams offering a broad range of professional services and expertise including railway design, construction, installation, and commissioning.
Our current portfolio of projects includes Transpennine Route Upgrade, Blackpool Tram, other GRIP stage 1-4 commissions for Network Rail, upcoming opportunities on Midland Mainline, CP7 frameworks, TfGM etc. Arup also advises clients worldwide on electrification systems, such as Eglinton (Toronto), On Corr projects (Toronto), and major projects in India, Southeast Asia and Middle East.
The Opportunity
This role will be primarily based in our client office in Delhi NCR and will require regular visits to our Arup office in Gurugram, ensuring the successful delivery of technically excellent multidisciplinary rail projects and bids primarily in the India & UK portfolio and as well as global.
In this role, you will be the design coordinator for the Traction power system package works based in client office, and you will be joining our lively and dynamic rail team where you will be a key contributor within a wider multi-disciplinary rail team, responsible for the successful delivery of our design commissions for our major clients including Network Rail contractors in the UK (in a design and build context), other agencies such as Train Operators, Councils, Passenger Transport Executives, academic institutions and EPC Contractors in India.

Is this role right for you?
Your core domain will be Traction Power Systems, you will be responsible for determining the design requirements of wide range of Traction power systems, Interfaces and coordination [that may include 1x25kV, 2x25kV AT, Static frequency Converters (SFC), and 1500V or 750V DC] from our client brief and be able to make sound decisions and propose the right design solutions with guidance of our Traction Power Team Lead, ultimately reporting to the Project Manager and Project Director. Subsequently, produce the necessary Traction power design with the support of senior experts, and provide effective solutions to multidisciplinary design teams working on large or medium-sized projects within the allocated budget and schedule.
All the while, you will have the freedom to work independently, managing your own personal development utilizing our in- house and external training opportunities, where you will work with a team of engineers in your team.
Key Responsibilities
Production of Traction power supply (TPS), EHV/HV/MV Distribution and Earthing and Bonding design at all stages of design [Concept/Preliminary to detailed design]. ability to identify design requirements from technical reports and calculation sheets. Producing Preliminary and detailed design (including Power Supply & Distribution equipment layout plans, single line diagrams, equipment sizing, installation details, protection & control, schematics, bills of quantity, wiring and cable plans within multi-disciplinary rail projects). Experienced in substation design including TSS/RSS/Feeding Stations/Midpoint sectioning (SP/SSP) etc. Competent in the production of design drawings using CAD (e.g. Bentley MicroStation / AutoCAD tool Knowledge on the AC/DC traction power simulation studies (power factor, load flow, stability, short circuit, and stray current etc.) including Harmonics, Resonance, Protection relay setting and coordination studies. Capable to understand the Earthing & Bonding studies, stray current/corrosion mitigation strategies for AC/DC traction systems. Experience in undertaking site surveys, site visits and reporting on asset conditions. Good Knowledge on team management, coordination, and client engagements Knowledge on Project management in design / tender stage and report to Lead Engineer / Design Manager with knowledge on design and tendering programme planning including user engagement activities, design development, statutory submissions, approvals and tender documentation, etc. Capable to Identifying design risks and propose mitigation strategies to maintain key project milestones Confident to attend the meetings related to design and tendering matters and coordinate internal/external team members under supervision of project managers / senior engineers. Ensure successful submissions of project deliverables, and endorsement by relevant parties for design and tender documents under supervision of lead engineers. Good Knowledge of complex traction simulation studies, including insulation coordination, Di-electric coordination studies. Good Knowledge in emerging technologies including 2x25kV AT system and Static frequency converters (SFCs) will be an added advantage with knowledge in Semi-high speed and high-speed rail projects will be advantage.We'd love to hear from you if you have.
Overall discipline experience of above 8 years with relevant experience of 4 years in an independent Traction Power design engineer role with strong demonstrating design skills, ability to understand simulation studies with the use of technical software. An appropriate university engineering degree and ideally an associate member/chartership of IET or equivalent. Experience in a design engineer role and good understanding of construction methods and installation, Vendor Approvals, involvement in design safety discussions with good technical demonstration skills. Experience in production of complete Traction power system package deliverables for Depot, Main line/at-grade, Elevated and Underground sections and in Interface and Coordination, prepare meeting minutes and represent Arup in client meeting Involved in preparation of design basis reports, ability to interpret technical specifications and understand technical notes/queries under supervision. Strong organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills and creative, self-motivated with good interpersonal and influencing skills. Good Knowledge of OLE/OCS, 3rd Rail, Railway infra structure and systems Good working knowledge of relevant British/Europe Standards, India Standards, Railway Group and Network Rail Standards. Knowledge of preparing bill of quantities [BoQ] and knowledge on design management and project management will be advantage as this is client facing role.
