Vancouver Detox Centre

Vancouver Detox Centre (VDC) is an inpatient medical WDM program with 24-hour nursing care. Located at 377 East 2nd Avenue in Vancouver, VDC offers withdrawal management services through pharmacology, psychosocial intervention and low-barrier groups such as yoga, acupuncture and NA/AA/CA panels. VDC offers cultural services such as a Talking Circle, smudging and spiritual care. Clients are supported by a multi-disciplinary team that includes physicians, nurses, social workers and detox workers.

 

As a Detox Worker with VCH you will provide assessment, monitoring and referral of chemically dependent adults and youth at the Detox Centre, and provide care and supervision to intoxicated individuals in a police holding unit.

Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience

Graduation from a recognized Health Care Worker educational program plus two (2) years' related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Second language requirements will be noted on posting, if required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Sound knowledge of the principles and practices related to the assessment and care of chemically dependent adults and youth.Proven counseling skills.Ability to assess, supervise and monitor chemically dependent adults and youth.Ability to present educational materials and lead discussion groups related to substance abuse.Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, to work independently with minimal direction, to take initiative, to organize and prioritize work and to meet deadlines.Demonstrated ability to establish/maintain satisfactory work relationships with the public and other employees, to deal tactfully and effectively with co-workers, public and staff from other agencies, to maintain confidentiality and to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.Ability to carry out the physical demands of the job. The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For all new hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health, you will be asked to provide this information as part of the onboarding process.
