Development Director - Kingston, NY
The Cornell Cooperative Extension Ulster County (CCEUC) Development Director serves on the leadership team to develop and deliver strategic leadership in financial development to increase unrestricted revenue and advance CCE Ulster’s mission and programming. The Director directs activities that may include donor recruitment and cultivation, annual giving, government and foundation grants, endowment bequests, and gifts and capital campaigns. The Director will plan, initiate and facilitate successful donor cultivation, grant development, development marketing, and event fundraising to meet CCEUC’s overall goals and objectives. They will build and maintain relationships with government entities, corporations, foundations, and individuals which lead to grant proposals, sponsorships, and major gifts through face-to-face solicitation visits. The Director will work closely with the Executive Director to set and reach development goals and engage volunteer Board of Directors, program and administrative staff in development activities. Required Qualifications: + Demonstrated ability to raise minimally restricted funds, with major and sustaining donors. + Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent Education (Associate’s Degree and 2 years transferable experience in development). + Experience in major gifts, organizational fundraising and resource development. + Working knowledge of giving and charitable entities and vehicles. + Experience in public relations, marketing, communications, fiscal management or a related field. + Demonstrated high degree of accuracy, integrity, sound professional judgment, and tact to effectively relate to people, and handle confidential and sensitive information. + Knowledge of foundation directories and corporate charitable policies. + Knowledge of budget and fiscal management principles. + Knowledge of regulations related to fundraising and sponsored grants at local, state and federal levels. + Advanced relational skills and ability to project a kind and confident attitude; this includes the ability to listen, synthesize, and integrate information in service of organizational goals + Demonstrated ability to establish work priorities, set and reach goals, and handle multiple deadlines. + Ability to work through conflict and competing stakeholder needs + Demonstrated ability to lead and participate in professional team efforts. + Demonstrated ability to relate to and reach diverse audiences and stakeholder groups. + Ability to invite, give and receive constructive feedback. + Proven creative problem-solving and ability to work within complex organizational structures. + Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written and visual means using educational tools and methods. + Demonstrated ability to utilize technology effectively. + Excellent analytic, organizational, and time management skills. + Ability to coordinate and direct the work of others. Preferred Qualifications: + Knowledge of fundraising software. + Experience with Cornell Cooperative Extension system. + Experience with grant-writing and grant-funded programs. Responsibilities/Essential Functions: Administrative Responsibilities: Direction & Management - 80% + Provide specialized leadership in strategic planning for fundraising activities. + Plan and deliver effective funding efforts including major donor cultivation, fundraising events, donor solicitations, campaigns, and grants and contracts. + Represent the Association to a variety of constituencies including government officials, Cornell campus administration, and current and potential funders. + Plan and implement major public affairs events and functions. + Network with local organizations, schools, and community groups to advertise and coordinate fundraising activities. + Develop and supervise communication and marketing efforts. + Direct marketing and fundraising development activities focused on Association priorities and the development of plans that address those priorities. + Direct the implementation of Association communication strategy and work with communications staff to identify communications and demographic trends which influence marketing and fundraising strategies, and create a modern unified image with increased brand awareness. + Research and organize activities to reach key prospects for funding opportunities. + Create unifying tone for press releases, website and CRM updates and integrations, and supervise/ serve as editor for publications. + Set and reach annual fundraising goals, with increasing expectations and amounts, as knowledge and staffing grow. + Work with Executive Director to identify and deliver sustainable multi-year staffing and development goals. + Motivate staff and volunteers to participate as needed in fundraising efforts. + Lead Association during Executive Director’s absence. + Continuously and rigorously evaluate fundraising efforts, and adjust strategy as needed. + Form and maintain effective working relationship with Cornell Cooperative Extension Administration. + Direct the preparation and submission of corporate, foundation and private grants and contract proposals to secure funding, involving Executive Director, finance staff and Board of Directors. + Provide input to program goals based on financial feasibility and impact. + Work with Program Leaders to communicate educational program goals. + Provide specialized guidance and management of donation, grant and contract funding. + Lead effective meetings. + Solve problems and resolve conflicts that arise with assigned staff, utilizing appropriate policies and procedures. + Manage new and existing sources of funding including but not limited to: tracking donations and grants, developing and preparing internal reporting systems, and working with staff to ensure each project or program is meeting proposal and project outcomes and expectations. + Review, monitor and guide appropriateness of expenditures on awards. + Ensure accurate, meaningful donor solicitations and grant requests and follow up reporting, maximizing annual renewals and additional opportunities for donations, foundation funding, state and local funding opportunities. + Develop proposals and reports for funding agencies and donors in accordance with funding guidelines. + Manage funding opportunities, including research and analysis, and respond to new and existing funding opportunities. Coordination/Operation - 15% + Coordinate communications, development marketing and outreach activities to reach target audiences and maximize fundraising potential. + Provide highly specialized complex support (i.e. writing reports and maintaining excellent historical records) to accomplish financial goals related to donations, grants and contracts. + Organize complex tasks in implementing communication and marketing plans, related to campaigns, donations, grants and contracts. + Coordinate and/or implement donor solicitation programs. + Write, prepare, disseminate and keep accurate records and/or copies of all communications, reports and fundraising materials such as brochures and newsletters, with input or assistance from staff. + Work with relevant staff to develop and manage donor databases for use in marketing and fundraising efforts. + Coordinate internal and external mailings, including communications and event invitations. + Organize billings and claims associated with grant funded programs. + Work with finance team to track expenses of various fundraising initiatives for cost and benefit analyses. + Review invoices and work with funders to resolve invoices, expenditure and payment issues, and obtain approval for successful payment of invoices. + Provide logistical support in planning and executing events and programs. + Effectively maintain professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts. + Organize Association materials and/or resources to/from activities/events, such as the Ulster County Fair. Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5% + In cooperation with Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address fundraising and association priorities. + Collaborate in activities in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
