Responsibilities
The primary purpose of this position is:
To provide continuity in diagnostic imaging services and to serve as the senior Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist" which includes but is not limited to: planning, directing, and overseeing daily operations of the Radiology Element; and performing difficult, moderate to high complexity diagnostic imaging techniques. Also, to assist the Clinical Medicine Flight Commander by examining that the Element operates in compliance with all guiding regulations set forth by higher headquarters and the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).

The organizational goals or objectives of this position are: To provide effective and efficient leadership of the Radiology Element and to perform diagnostic imaging techniques/obtain accurate biological blood results in support of the diagnosis and treatment of medical illness/injury within the 61st MDG and associated communities in order to support comprehensive medical care for TRICARE beneficiaries and sustain maximum combat readiness for active-duty members.
DUTY 1:
Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of the Radiology Element, ensuring that diagnostic imaging services provided through, or given directly by the MTF complies with legal and regulatory requirements and meets customer needs. Promotes organizational goals by developing clinical objectives to facilitate cost effective quality diagnostic imaging. Researches, interprets, analyzes and applies DoD policy and guidelines, TRICARE contracts, Medical Group and Air Force Instructions and Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care Guidelines. Establishes policies and procedures integrating guidance from numerous sources with local resources. Plans and schedules work in a manner that promotes a smooth flow and even distribution. Coordinates plans and schedules with other managers and customers as appropriate. Identifies need for changes in priorities and takes action to implement such changes. Plans work to be accomplished by staff, sets and adjusts short, and prepares schedules. Assigns work to Radiology Element staff based on organization pri01ities and consideration of difficulty and requirements of assignments such that the expe1ience, training, and abilities of staff are effectively utilized to meet organization and customer needs. Balances workload and provides advice, guidance, and direction on a wide range of administrative issues. Reviews element mission, functions, and manning. Identifies requirements and initiates requests for additional resources including personnel, overtime, equipment, supplies, and space to ensure success in meeting goals and objectives. Manages/evaluates the Radiology Element's annual spending/ensures unfunded requests are submitted as appropriate. Conducts training and technical oversight of military radiology personnel in the performance of diagnostic imaging techniques/processes. Prepares evaluation(s) of technicians' technical competency, additional training requirements, and/or future utilization within the department. Develops and refines protocols and Medical Group Instructions (MDGIs). Responsible for ensuring the configuration, upgrade, and maintenance of diagnostic imaging equipment and database solutions. Reviews quality control and preventive maintenance logs investigating and correcting any discrepancies. Provides advice to supervisor on significant issues and problems related to work accomplishment. Establishes metrics and analysis systems to ensure actions are timely and reviewed at critical points. Accepts, amends, or rejects work presented by staff. Performs self-inspection and presents detailed and comprehensive report with any connective action taken to supervisor. Follows-up to ensure complete and quality resolution of discrepancies. Assesses and revises or constructs policies and procedures as needed to find ways to improve quality, timeliness, and efficiency of work.
DUTY 2:
Administers diagnostic radiographic examinations. Utilizes radiological equipment, machines, and accessories to apply complex radiographic exposure techniques in accomplishing requested diagnostic tests/examinations. Radiological procedures are performed on such body parts/areas as upper extremities, lower extremities, spinal column, thorax, abdomen, face/cranium, and other areas as assigned. Determines the proper machine/instrument technical factors and control settings to ensure correct calculated exposures of the targeted body part or po1iion. Places/directs patient's body in the position(s) necessary to obtain the views requested. May include immobilizing the patient with straps, sandbags, cushions, etc. Exposes only the designated patient body area. Utilizes protective devices and shields to properly protect patient, self, and others in the proximity from direct or secondary radiation.
Duty 3: 5% Critical
Serves as laboratory assistant. Reviews, enters, and updates data and obtains test authorizations from the Composite Health Care System (CHCS). Verifies patient eligibility via Defense Eligibility and Enrollment Reporting System (DEERS) prior to specimen collection. Collects blood samples from patients using capillary or venipuncture techniques as required per age specific requirements. Aliquots and stores blood samples, prepares specimens for shipment using appropriate Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Air Force (AF) guidelines and mail carriers. Inspects biological specimens for shipping acceptability prior to shipment. Updates and retrieves test results via CHCS, prints results and distributes to civilian health care providers. Adheres to Privacy Act Requirements. Performs recall procedures on patients needed for recollection of specimens. Follows all universal blood and body fluid precautions.
DUTY 4:
Interacts with clinic patients and clientele. Responds to patient requests for appointment bookings and, as necessary, initiates contact with patient for initial booking and rescheduling, as well as scheduling of repeat or additional testing. Considers the patient's condition, e.g. injuries, illness, and physical disability, to provide assistance in preparation for and administration of the examination. Makes accommodation for patients who are substantially more robust or frail than normal. Positions equipment and patient to compensate for patient's condition. Reassures patients by explaining the procedures and responding to their questions and concerns.
DUTY 5:
Ensures maintenance of assigned equipment. Regularly cleans, oils, and makes minor repairs and adjustments to X-ray equipment, accessories, and automatic film processing machine or assigns personnel to accomplish these tasks.
DUTY 6
Performs radiologic technician administrative duties. Performs duties directly pertinent to technical duties and responsibilities, and as otherwise assigned. Such duties include, but are not limited to, the following: creates and maintains records of patients treated, examinations performed, views taken, and settings used. Prepares file jackets on patient X-rays. Maintains records of patients' appointment bookings. Monitors need for and requisitions supplies, equipment, equipment upgrades. Prepares and submits required or requested reports/documents.
DUTY 7
Keeps abreast of developments in the radiology field. Takes advantage of pertinent hard copy publications, internet resources, and occupational networking to keep current on trends and developments in the field. Brings to the attention of superiors those developments and advances that could be implemented in the local clinic to improve operation of the Radiology Element.
Performs other duties as assigned

Basic Requirement for Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist:
Radiology Certification: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. (Note: You must attach a copy of your radiology certification and transcripts.)
The following meet these requirements:(1) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.(2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence, as determined by OPM or the employing agency.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing radiographic procedures and examinations, setting up x-ray equipment, and reviewing images for quality. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Diagnostic Radiology/Radiography.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.Education
