The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks a Diagnostic Technologist to join the Bacteriology Lab. The Diagnostic Technologist utilizes their attention to quality and knowledge of scientific processes to perform high level microbiology testing procedures to meet client needs. This person is extremely reliable, flexible in dealing with unpredictable workloads and work schedules, and has exemplary time management skills. Their positive attitude allows them to effectively communicate under pressure to support unit initiatives in a collaborative, team-based environment.
The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Perform a comprehensive range of microbiology testing within the unit on a rotational basisReceive, evaluate and sort submitted specimens according to established protocols; create unique case accessionsProcess specimens for diagnostic testing; inoculate to appropriate mediasOperate, monitor, and troubleshoot lab equipment and instrumentationWork collaboratively with internal and external clients to ensure appropriate testing and service is providedProvide support to uphold the Quality Assurance systemParticipate in process improvement initiativesAssist with the training and support of technical staffPerform other duties as requestedEmployees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field with up to two years of work experience in a laboratory setting, or equivalent combination of education and experience Proficient with various basic software applications, with the ability to learn new software quickly (Microsoft Office Suite)Strong attention to detail; ability to perform laboratory procedures and record-keeping with accuracy, precision, and efficiencyExcellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skillsExcellent analytical and problem-solving skillsExcellent self-management practices to successfully oversee and organize competing priorities to meet deadlinesWorks well both individually and within a team environmentExperience working within an organization with an established quality assurance programAbility to sit or stand for extended periods of time at benches, computers, biological safety cabinets or while using laboratory equipment or instrumentationPreferred Qualifications

This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.This is a full-time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.
