The Digital Engineering Center is a transformation Group within the Engineering Division (Division 7). Division 7 works in partnership with the other Laboratory technical divisions to design and build advanced technology systems of national importance. The Division’s expertise includes mechanical, materials, aero, thermal, optical, control, and fabrication engineering plus energy and autonomous systems. Supporting the engineering efforts are a wide range of specialized laboratories, electronics and mechanical fabrication capabilities, plus integration and environmental test facilities. Special emphasis is placed on the integration of design and analysis capabilities to support the rapid prototyping of hardware systems.
Position Description
The Digital Engineering Center is currently seeking a motivated person to lead transforming how the Laboratory develops prototypes through the use of Digital Engineering. This staff member will lead digital engineering adoption activities that strengthen and develop our relationships within the Laboratory, with current DoD sponsors, and with potential new partners.
This role will include:
Partnering with program teams to understand needs, develop requirements, and guide transition to more digital methods Working with key staff to grow utilization of digital engineering methods across the Laboratory Gathering feedback and recommending enhancements to digital tools Developing metric framework to track user adoption and benefits of digital engineering, and then regularly assessing these metrics using data analytics Collaborating with leadership to refine transformation and adoption strategy
Primary Responsibilities
Develop metric framework to track user adoption and benefits of digital engineering, and develop methods to regularly assess these metrics; regularly assess these adoption metrics and digital engineering return on investment Represent the Digital Engineering Center as a focal point to Laboratory users and external partners. Lead and coordinate activities and engagement in order to facilitate adoption of the MITLL Digital Engineering methodology in prototype development Coordinate with staff across the Laboratory to advance collaboration, establish and implement strategies across Divisions to maximize digital engineering opportunities and increased user experience Leverage inter-personal relationships to shape digital engineering practices in effort to demonstrate how digital engineering can assist in sponsor acquisition strategy and decision-making processes Collaborate with leadership to refine transformation and adoption strategy Communicate DEC initiatives and capabilities with Division Heads, Group Leaders, Department Heads, and other potentially interested personnel. Seek out and identify new ideas; gather feedback and recommended enhancements to ensure the digital engineering platform and methodology serves the diverse needs of the Laboratory user community Participate in appropriate local professional associations, conferences, and consortiums to maintain high quality national contacts and awareness for digital Engineering and the opportunities for the Laboratory Monitor and track the status of digital engineering methods among other FFRDCs and DoD organizations in order to identify the position and status of other Digital Engineering activities in the community
This position reports directly to the DEC Group Leader.
Required Qualifications
5+ years’ experience working on prototyping programs (Level 1 and 2 program experience highly desirable) Data analytics and data analysis experience; experience with AI/ML and algorithm development highly desirable Proven leadership skills in a variety of roles Interest and experience with organizational change management techniques highly desirable Experience working in Mission Divisions or working closely with Mission Division staff Strategic/critical thinking skills, creativity, problem-solving, debate, challenging customer thinking, and fact-based analysis of alternatives is required People-person excited to engage with staff at all levels both internal and external to the Laboratory Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required; ability to represent the Digital Engineering Center and brief large audiences and senior officials with confidence Experience engaging with sponsors; program development experience highly desirable
