Ford Design – Technical Operations turns design vision into reality with an obsession to detail and the art of the possible. As an integral part of Ford Global Design, we deliver theme feasibility, surface geometry, and production-launch appearance quality.

Class A Surface Designer molds the creative vision into usable production intent surfaces while retaining the visual allure and identity of the design vision.

Bachelor's Degree in industrial design, transportation design, mechanical engineering, or equivalent practical experience 5+ years of Class A experience (Alias, ICEM Surf, ISD/IDX, Maya, Grasshopper), preferably within the automotive OEM creative Space

Even better, you'll have…

Understanding of latest industry quality standards for Automotive Class A surface Ability to analyze and validate Class A surface geometry for "best construction and Design practice" and providing feedback as necessary. Proficiency in developing and reviewing models in Blender, Unreal, VRED, Grasshopper, Blender, or equivalent rendering software   Comprehensive understanding of material selection and impact on surfacing opportunities.  This might include material behaviors beyond "free state" such as installed positions Thorough working knowledge of the Surface development process from Design conception phase though production release for both Exterior and Interior Design and components  Leads program surface progression of Design and surface expert evaluation Leads cross-system surface execution to ensure full system surface compatibility with A surface excellence Confirms all program surface interfaces are "Designed-in-Context" to a coordinated data set including supplier data Develops and maintains a coordinated Class A surface database (i.e. Reference Manager) Ensures incorporation of appropriated technical, attribute and program requirements into surface whilst maintaining the design vision. Drives resolution of surface data issues by leading power wall and digital reviews, Manages surface changes in database system (Ford SDMS system) Maintain program product structure and part history in database release system (Ford TeamCenter) to accurately represent evolution of design and change control Supports workload distribution, and prioritization of Class A surface development Facilitate program surface progression through the theme feasibility process. Develop and assist (mentor) Class A Surface Designers in the delivery of feasible math surfaces aligned with program milestones requirements that delivers design intent Develop Surfaces necessary to support the theme and feasibility development process up to and including final Class A production prove-out and tooling release.
