Job Summary: As the ITS Biomedical Engineering Director of Operations, you will play a critical role in leading and managing the operational aspects of biomedical engineering services for assigned regions within Hartford HealthCare, including multiple HHC regions, HHCMG, and contracted sites. Reporting to the System Director, you will ensure the safe, effective, and secure delivery of scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and support for our medical equipment. Your strategic planning skills will be essential as you implement local, and system directives aligned with HHC's strategic goals. You will be responsible for the salary and non-salary budget of your assigned regions. Through leadership and engagement, you will cultivate a positive team environment focused on continuous improvement, staff development, and consistent documentation practices to ensure we are always ready for regulatory inspections. Key Responsibilities: * Leadership & Culture o Champion HHC's core values and demonstrate H3W Leadership Behaviors. o Utilize Lean methodologies during team huddles to drive continuous improvement. o Apply High Reliability Techniques to minimize clinical and non-clinical errors. * Operational Excellence o Ensure adherence to the Medical Equipment Management Plan for your assigned region(s). o Implement and maintain cybersecurity protocols for biomedical equipment. o Develop and monitor departmental goals aligned with HHC's strategic initiatives. o Collaborate with local leadership to address equipment requests, concerns, and issues, offering solutions and recommendations. o Provide the Environment of Care Committee with monthly KPIs and conduct regular rounds at acute care sites. o Facilitate team engagement during huddles, celebrating successes, monitoring progress, providing recognition, and fostering continual improvement. o Manage timekeeping and payroll, approve PTO, and adjust schedules to ensure coverage. o Conduct monthly 1:1 meeting with direct reports. o Coordinate equipment recalls and alerts with regional engineers. o Generate reports to improve the work environment. o Provide regular performance feedback to staff and conduct annual appraisals. o Engage with department leadership, solicit feedback on performance, and address improvement opportunities. o Ensure staff documentation is consistently completed for compliance with regulatory agencies including TJC, DPH, CMS, CAP, NFPA, OSHA, FDA, AAMI, ASHE, and ANSI. o Participate on local and system-level initiatives to improve medical device systems management. * Equipment Life Cycle Management/Capital Planning o Identify end-of-life/end-of-support medical equipment for assigned areas. o Collaborate with engineers to develop system-wide remediation plans. o Partner with leadership to create regional medical equipment capital plans and acquisitions. * Budget Responsibility o Develop and manage salary and non-salary budgets for your assigned regions. o Analyze budget variances and report findings with reconciliation measures to the System Director. * Project Management o Serve as a stakeholder or project manager for medical equipment projects. o Manage projects from initiation to completion, including coordination with finance, purchasing, and deployment. o Assist in strategic planning for medical device systems and provide project support. * Other Related Duties o Perform other duties as required by the System Director. Working Relationships: * Reports To: ITS Biomedical Engineering System Director * Direct Reports: Biomedical Engineering Work Coordinator, Biomedical Equipment Technician I, II, and III (Varies, 8-18) * Indirect Reports: Varies 1-10 (Clinical Systems Engineering Team) * External Vendors/Contractors: Oversee and manage vendor and contractor performance, monthly invoices, and customer relations. Budget Responsibility: * Responsible for developing and managing salary and non-salary budgets. * Act as project manager on projects up to $10,000,000 * Operational approval level up to $100,000 Requirements and Specifications: * Minimum Requirements: o Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical or related Engineering/Technology discipline preferred. o Five years of Biomedical Engineering experience, preferably in a hospital environment. o Two years working in a lead role. o CBET, CCE, or CHTM certification may substitute for experience. o Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical personnel, develops high level communications and presentations to leadership. * Preferred Requirements: o Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical or related Engineering/Technology discipline with Master’s degree in Biomedical, Engineering/Technology, or MBA preferred. o 10 years of Biomedical Engineering experience, preferably in a hospital environment. o Five years as a supervisor or in management capacity. o CHTM (Certified Healthcare Technology Manager) may substitute for years of experience. * Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: o In-depth knowledge of medical devices, systems, and new technology. o Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. o Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills. o Working knowledge of Lean principles and the ability to lead process improvement initiatives. o Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment. o Quick ability to learn, adapt to, and teach new technologies and techniques. o Ability to function as a problem solver for both the Biomedical Engineering department and clinical departments. o Capability to function as a valuable member of an engineering team. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: * The role requires periods of sitting, standing, and walking. * Occasional lifting up to 30 lbs., bending, stooping, reaching, and using hand dexterity. * Frequent use of communication equipment, including computer, phone, and communication devices. * Exposure to standard hospital environment includes exposure to electronic equipment, noise, and occasionally exposure to airborne infectious disease or bodily fluids while using Personal Protective Equipment. * Will be required to drive to other locations within the assigned region.
