General Summary:
The purpose of this position is to institute programs to ensure the hospital complex and assigned offsite properties are maintained and operated in a manner that supports the mission of the hospital.
Essential Job Functions:
Responsible for the overall leadership and direction of the Facility Operations and people resources.
Interview and recommends prospective staff candidates, contractors, and/or suppliers, recommend hiring, and oversee any related HR issues. Participate in the training of staff in the operation and maintenance of plant operations equipment/systems to ensure a continuity of operation. Responsible for performance appraisals and establish/evaluate goals and standards of performance
Recommend new policies and revision to existing policies.
Participate in the preparation of annual department expense budgets and operates within approved budget.
Document and conduct continuing education for staff.
Participate in the operational planning process including future facility expansion.
Collaborate in development of programs to support short and long range plans for the department.
Establish preventative maintenance programs for the physical plant that ensures a continuity of operation.
Respond to emergency mal-function events. Assesses situation, and directs action to stabilize the situation avoiding further damage. Documents incidents.
Identify deferred maintenance in building utility systems. Reviews construction plans and suggests possible service tie-in and routing locations. Participates in system start-up, training and commissioning.
Coordinates the removal of obsolete equipment and installation of new and/or replacement equipment.
Reviews schematics and dimensional plans for equipment/system installation and participates in the construction management phase.
Establishes compliance with safety codes and other regulations established by city, state and federal governments. Ensures that the department/facility operates in accordance with hospital policies and all authorities having jurisdiction including: JCAHO, HCFA, IDPH, OSHA, and City of Chicago.
The authority to hire, separate, promote, demote, write and administer performance evaluations.
Other job functions as assigned.
Education and Experience:
The knowledge and skill normally acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or a minimum of 15 years healthcare experience in plant operations.
Working knowledge of health care building, life safety, electric, and plumbing codes required.
Knowledge of facility maintenance operations in the health care field is essential, as well as managerial skills, all of which would normally be acquired through five years of experience in a hospital maintenance supervisory position.
Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of hospital employees and external contacts is required.
