DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL

 

QUALIFICATIONS: High School Degree or equivalent. 

 

REQUIRED SKILLS:  Must be able/have the desire to relate to people with disabilities.  Also must have the ability to work effectively with co-workers and supervisors.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES & ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES:

 

·         Perform a variety of duties designed to assist individuals in developing skills necessary for community living in the least restrictive envi­ronment.

·         Implement and promote the principles of Social Role Valorization (SRV).

·         Be aware of ISA goals, written programs, documentation requirements, and the proper implementation thereof and make a conscious effort to apply them to daily living skills.

·         Assist individuals in developing skills in activities of daily living (household chores, cooking, cleaning, eating, bathing, laundry etc.) participating in integrated age-appropriate recreational/leisure activities, developing choice making and communication skills etc.  Assure that individual personal hygiene needs are met.

·         Notify the Manager, Nurse or Senior Manager of any changes in the individual’s health status immediately.  Document pertinent medical and behavioral incidents as they may occur.  Be familiar with individuals’ records and daily charting to keep abreast of changes.

·         Attend any applicable meetings, Agency trainings and in-service workshops to develop skills.

·         Continually assess house needs (physical aspects of house, supplies needed, etc.) and report such characteristics and/or deficiencies to the Manager.

·         Maintain confidentiality of information any individuals who live in the home.

·         Develop and foster an attitude of team effort and cooperation.

·         Maintain professional working relationship with individual, community members, family members, etc.

·         Be able to physically assist individuals in toileting, eating, positioning, transferring, and any other physical needs.

·         Assist individuals in being a valued member of their community by assisting them in participating in typical and valued activities, such as banking, going to the barber, pharmacy and doctor visits, church, and volunteer organizations.

·         Follow safety procedures as outlined in the Employee Safety Program.

·         Additional duties as assigned.
