Director, Audit Services (Culture, Conduct and Compliance) - Internal Audit

Role/ Department

This is a newly created Director position within the Chief Risk Office and Capital Markets (CRO_CM) Audit team and will be based in London. The successful candidate will report to the CRO_CM Managing Director, who is based in London. The successful candidate will bring proven expertise in culture, conduct and compliance framework activities to the Audit Services department and will play a strategic role in the design and execution of a revamped audit universe and related risk based audit coverage strategy for the Audit Services department. 


The candidate will interact and build relationships with senior management in Northern Trust’s Risk Management and Compliance organization. Additionally, the candidate will utilize their technical expertise to the execution of the related annual audit plan, lead department initiatives, act as a trusted advisor to stakeholders and act as the Audit Services representative in key governance forums. Given the nature of the role, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to leverage their subject matter knowledge to support the enhancement of compliance risk management activities across Northern Trust. 

The key responsibilities of the role include:


Leadership and Management

Demonstrate excellent communication and leadership to influence a wide range of stakeholders, including risk management and business leadership, regulators, and external auditorsDemonstrate strong initiative, project management, interpersonal skills, sound decision-making, intuitive thinking, and sensitivity to cultural diversityOversee the professional development and performance management processes, including recruiting staff, developing talent, building an effective team with compliance subject matter expertise, and optimizing resources Develop and deliver training targeted to audit partners outside the risk management and compliance team to enable them to remain connected and informed on risk management activities Leverage a strong peer network and tap the industry for knowledge and intelligence to identify leading culture, conduct and compliance practicesRepresent Audit Services through active participation in various culture, conduct and compliance related organizational and governance committees, task forces, forums etc.


Operational

Ensure appropriate audit coverage of current and emerging risks related to culture, conduct and compliance activities  Deliver a risk-based audit plan that validates Northern Trust’s control environment or identifies developmental opportunities related to Northern Trust policies, global or local regulations, or industry best practicesProvide technical input, challenge and execution on planned audit work to drive risk management awareness across the audit department Support Audit Services regulatory required validation activities as required through the provision of subject matter expertise input in approach design, execution and reporting Lead continuous monitoring efforts to stay informed of changes in Northern Trust and identify current or future risks that should be assessed through the audit plan

Skills/ Qualifications

The successful candidate will benefit from having: 

A college or university degree, ideally in risk management/auditing discipline Advanced auditing or practical application experience in a second line risk management role, with a focus in the financial services industry or global corporations preferred Specific subject matter expertise in culture, conduct and compliance activities and related regulatory/industry expectationsDemonstrated experience in designing and delivering high quality, high value internal audit deliverables (including regulatory validation activities) for global organizations or in regulated environments, in accordance with IIA standards.Ability to execute a formal audit strategy that reflects the organization’s risk profile, regulatory/legal requirements, and current risk trendsProficient written and oral communication, negotiation, and listening skills demonstrated through an ability to foster relationships with a variety of stakeholders (including senior business and technology leaders and regulators)Strong business acumen and understanding of the financial services industryExperience managing a team of professionals, effectively enabling their professional growth and developmentAbility to adapt and react timely in a changing and dynamic work environment, tight deadlines and variable workloads
