Director, Clinical Engineering Imaging and IoMT Services

The University of Miami/UHealth department of Clinical Engineering has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Director, Clinical Engineering Imaging and IoMT Services to work at the UHealth Medical Campus.

Core Summary

The Director of Clinical Engineering- Imaging and IoMT Services, reporting directly to the Executive Director of Clinical Engineering, is responsible for implementing and educating the Advanced Imaging service and Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) program to client facilities and enterprise-wide responsibilities.  Working collaboratively with the clinical engineering managers to ensure that all advanced imaging equipment and systems are inventoried, adequately budgeted, and have appropriate support plans. The director must have excellent organizational and customer service skills because of the close daily relationship and interaction with the customer facility’s staff. The Director is the liaison between IT, clinical operations, and Clinical Engineering and manages the aspects of the IoMT scope of services for UHealth.

Core Responsibilities

Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Clinical Engineering department and resident staff technicians and specialists.

Creates and assigns monthly scheduled maintenance workload, tracks work throughout the month, and provides accurate monthly reporting to facility leadership.

Approves resident staff expenses, PTO requests, and timecards.

Monitors service repair activities completed by resident staff technicians, field service technicians, and vendor/manufacturer technicians while on site.

Mandates complete and accurate medical equipment inventory of ALL biomedical devices; ensures that all service documentation is completed concisely and standardized.

Ensures that all UHealth Clinical Engineering key performance indicators are met.

Ensures that all purchase orders and requests for parts are completed without undue delay.

Prioritizes balance of service repair and scheduled maintenance workload.

Works with UHealth Clinical Engineering staff to perform annual program quality audits; follows up on findings to ensure survey readiness.

Meets with hospital department leadership frequently to discuss the needs and opportunities of each department.

Develop relationships with Hospital senior leadership and C-Suite personnel.

Communicates with crucial hospital leadership through participation on various committees.

Plays a crucial role in the planning, evaluation, acquisition, service, and disposal of biomedical equipment.

Assists in educating end users about proper usage and in-servicing of biomedical equipment.

Takes the lead on projects regarding biomedical equipment and network integration of medical devices.

Evaluate and review service contract information to ensure the healthcare organization's needs and goals are met.

Monitors and tracks medical device recalls and safety alerts; follows up to ensure appropriate action is taken.

Addresses customer and employee issues promptly, escalating to the Executive Director as necessary.

Provides resources to participate in the investigation of medical device-related incidents.

Maintains all facility-assigned test equipment to the original manufacturer requirements; responsible for annual calibration of assigned equipment, including acquiring and filing the appropriate documentation.

Works with the Clinical Engineering Management team to drive the Integrated Systems Management program, including scheduling and attending meetings with Hospital IT personnel.

Reviews policies and procedures annually; provides feedback and updates to the plans as needed.

Completes onboarding and UHealth orientation for new employees.

Responsible for ensuring that the Hospital HR department requirements are met for each employee; appropriate documentation is filed for reference as needed.

Drives training and education of biomedical internship technicians and apprentices

Motivates and leads the team by setting annual goals for each technician and the department, monitors and tracks throughout the year, and provides feedback for improvement.

Assists the customer in developing annual operating budgets for their associated cost center.

Forecasts capital equipment needs by managing the overall equipment lifecycle process.

Serves on hospital committees as a subject matter expert on healthcare technology management and medical equipment maintenance standards and regulations.

Guides with medical equipment technology assessments, capital purchasing, equipment safety, and accountability for managing the total cost of biomedical equipment ownership.

Proactively engages biomedical equipment organizations, peer institutions, and manufacturers as parts of a comprehensive quality improvement program.

Department Specific Functions

The Director of Clinical Engineering- Imaging and IoMT Services supports and oversees the clinical equipment/systems under their care.

This includes tracking hardware (configuration items), software, and network documentation.

Provides user support, systems technical service, and support and participates in system projects as requested.

Serve as consultant/advisor to hospital staff regarding system evaluation and selection.

Assist with training on software-related implementation.

Coordinate installation and maintenance of medical devices, PC hardware, networking, and software with the hospital Information Technology Department.

Operates as a liaison between IT, Clinical Engineering, and Clinical Leadership to improve initiatives for cybersecurity posture and medical device integration of all medical equipment types.

Leads efforts to bridge communications, processes, and alignment with IT policies and standards as applied to medical equipment and provides feedback on the continuous improvement and best practices for organizational change.

Utilize project management tools to manage and accomplish system implementations, updates, and upgrades within established time frames and budget constraints.

Work with all managers to improve the use of Advanced Imaging equipment & systems.

Evaluate and provide recommendations to managers on how to improve their staff’s use of software and technology.

Assists in the evaluation of the predictable life span of aging equipment.

Advise clinical managers of the need to upgrade or purchase additional software.

Responsible for inventory control. Must accurately track and report all additions, deletions, and changes, including department inventories and PM schedule accuracy.

Orders and tracks all necessary parts and purchased services for repairs using the approved purchasing method for the account.

To inform them of account status, you must work closely with the Executive Director, Clinical Engineering Managers, and departmental Account Managers.

This must include PM status, repair status, level and type of special interests, customer concerns, and problems.

As required, you must be available for after-hours service calls and participate in the on-call rotation.

Core Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field

Minimum five(5) years of relevant experience

Certified Healthcare Technology Manager (CHTM) preferred.

IT Security Certification preferred.

​IT Networking Certification preferred.
