Job Summary

Supports the development and maintenance of scalable data stores that supply big data in forms needed for business analysis. Manages activities through senior managers and managers and implements corporate and divisional strategic plans and budgets.

What is the opportunity?

As Director, Data Engineering within RBC Investor Services (RBC IS), you will responsible for the thought leadership behind delivering data engineering solutions including use case architecture and data lake, data aggregation and democratization services. You will work with the business to drive automation, security and find efficiencies through data engineering best practices to help drive the transformation strategy

What will you do?

Manage and maintain RBC IS Data and authorization platforms including end-to-end delivery of Cloud based (Public and Private) automated advanced data services and analytics layers (BI, AI/ML) and integration with applications across RBC IS to provide efficient, robust, secure, reliable data engineering services

Participate in Data Engineering, Data/cloud Architecture strategy, medallion data lake architecture and roadmap definition and review process.

Be responsible for execution of strategic initiatives including planning, delivery, measurement, status reporting and issue resolution etc.

Take ownership of end-to-end delivery of data engineering use cases for internal and external clients and work closely with business and technology stakeholders.

Provide thought leadership in selection of next-generation technologies and architecture components as per latest trends and RBC Standards, frameworks and best practices

Promote a data first mindset across the enterprise to enable RBC IS to become a stronger data-driven organization.

Take ownership and adhere to RBC Enterprise IT risk and compliance standards, vulnerability management and tech currency of application software and hardware infrastructure.

Identify, monitor, & mitigate cross-project or cross-program dependencies while managing relationships, anticipating / mitigating risks, facilitating communications and lead projects in an agile fashion

Engage sponsoring executives and project team members establishing trusted partnerships to ensure deliveries within scope, budget, and timelines while also effectively communicating and discussing analytic insights with senior stakeholders

Balance collaboration and consensus with ability to assert project management discipline where required while being the seasoned practitioner in leading project teams through fast and complex pace of projects.

Work in an agile fashion to onboard data, define a business process for ETL and create and manage a data dictionary and data lineage.

Define user access management and provide training on data elements as well as audit process for data to ensure that it is current and relevant

Lead a team of data engineers and full stack developers

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

Minimum 10+ years in a data engineering focused role

5 yrs in Director level leadership experience

Extensive Experience managing cross functional teams both on the technical and non-technical side, and advanced interaction and communication with Business stakeholders

In depth experience in delivering solutions with Azure Databricks stack (including Delta lake) or equivalent, Python, Azure SQL, Container based solutions (OCP, Docker) and API and Portal technologies

Work with tools such as Elastic, Hadoop and SQL

Effective programming / query skills and in-depth knowledge of common data manipulation, visualization and analytical tools (e.g. Elastic, Python, NodeJS, PowerBI etc.)

Experience and comfort delivering a project in true agile fashion and work cross functionally, where requirements are iteratively defined

Analytical, insights driven with the ability to help the organization to leverage data driven decisions

Strategic with strong change management, continuous improvement and transformation skills

Master’s degree in computer science, computer/data engineering or equivalent under-grad degree with extensive experience

​Nice-to-have  

5+ years of project management experience in cross functional settings

Engineering/Math background with a focus on statistics and/or analytics
