Job Description:

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for a visionary leader for Data Science at Scholastic. The Director of Data Science has overall responsibility for leading data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence and predictive modeling projects within Scholastic. The Data Science team is tasked with critical projects designed to mitigate risks and/or promote growth for Scholastic. We are looking for an experienced leader with significant Data Science expertise who is motivated to make a significant impact in Scholastic. This role reports to the Vice President of Data and Analytics.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in utilizing data science to drive revenue growth for an organization. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

LEADERSHIP AND STRATEGIC DIRECTION

Own the data science solutions strategy and uncover opportunities to apply data science to Scholastic’s businesses.

STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT AND COLLABORATION

Engage key stakeholders to understand their business and data needs and translate them into technical specifications to deliver data science, machine learning, and AI solutions that have meaningful business impact. 

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND DELIVERY

Ensure that the development and deployment of data science models adheres to industry best practices. Design and champion data science and data products methodologies for the entire team. Ensure consistent, on-time delivery of team projects.

TEAM DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT

Attract, hire, coach, mentor, retain and develop a top team of data scientists. Promote collaboration, continuous learning, and excellence.

DATA SCIENCE EXPERTISE AND INNOVATION

Serve as Scholastic’s leading expert in data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence to guide strategy and projects. 

EXECUTIVE LEVEL COMMUNICATION

Effectively communicate complex technical concepts and insights to executive level audiences

ORGANIZATIONAL IMPACT

Use data science to reduce costs, drive growth, and identify and mitigate risk for Scholastic

Qualifications

HOW YOU CAN FIT (Qualifications)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Experience using Statistical and Machine Learning algorithms on business data and solving problems in a commercial environment. Strong understanding of data analysis and modeling, solid background in statistics, computer science and related fields.

Proven experience leading data science teams and data products teams.

Expertise in Python, relevant machine learning packages such as scikit-learn.

Expertise in SQL.

Experience with AWS SageMaker, Redshift, S3.

Excellent communication skills

Excellent team and project management skills

Experience: 8-10 years of experience in Data Science

7+ years of experience of people management including leading other people managers

Education: Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, or Computer Science. Advanced degree in quantitative discipline preferred
