Director, Engineering Construction

 

As one of the world's premier cancer centers, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) is committed to the progressive control and cure of cancer through programs of patient care, research and education. Design + Construction (D+C) is committed to excellence in planning, designing and constructing facilities that support the Center's mission. To accomplish this, D+C must successfully implement capital projects with close collaboration between physicians, scientists and staff by establishing a standard of quality in construction management by assembling teams of professionals.

Join our Design + Construction team to lead the engineering design and construction of all phases of the Institutions capital construction program, throughout MSKCC and at Regional Facilities.

 

Position Overview:

Engineering Design: Provide guidance toward the functions and activities of the center’s professional engineering, design and construction management staff. Determine staff assignments for projects design and monitors projects progress.Contract Administration/Development of Engineering Standards: Through independent development and use of business processes within Unifier, and other construction project management tools, transparently manages all Engineering activities that build a repository for all Facilities Management staff for engineering design during all phases of the Institutions Capital Construction Program and Operations.MEP Feasibility of Projects: In a collaborative effort with the MSKCC Client, participates in the development and evaluation of program requirements, mechanical and electrical feasibility of plans based on user requirements, institutional goals, resources, and departmental resources and commitments. Develop Facilities MEP/Infrastructure Master Plans. Lead strategic implementation of projects approved by corporate from approved master plans.Code Compliance: Manage the engineering staff and participates in the development of specifications and standards to be utilized for all construction projects. Ensure compliance with “authorities having jurisdiction” such as: Department of Buildings of the City of New York, NYSDOH, JCAHO, NFPA and OSHA. Ensure compliance with MSKCC corporate standards for purchasing, insurance policies and procedures and construction standards.Cost Control: Develop estimated total cost for all MEP/ Infrastructure Projects. Implement cost control measures to ensure delivery of projects with budget. Has authority to commit funds within the scope of the approved budget.Project Management: Develop project schedules and implements procedure to continually monitor the progress. Oversee and lead design and preparation of construction documents by consultants of projects. Compliance of Standards: Oversee management of construction/trade contracts for all MEP and Infrastructure Projects. Ensure adherence to contract specifications and facilities standards, evaluates the validity of adjustments to project scope.Liaison with Planning Department: Working in conjunction with Facilities Management Planning and Plant Operations during the planning of program driven, MEP and Infrastructure Projects to ensure the availability of infrastructure utilities and provide professional expertise towards the infrastructure upgrades for the success and feasibility for projects.Coordination with other Departments: Provide critical project information and recommendations to Facilities various Departmental Directors for the MEP and infrastructure work.Personal Growth: Enhance professional growth and development of engineering staff through participation in educational programs, current literature, in service meetings and workshops.

Key Qualifications:

Mechanical or Electrical Engineering education with at least 10 years of design & construction experience in Healthcare and Research Facilities.Broad professional knowledge of construction industry with emphasis on Healthcare and Research facilities is essential.Knowledge of NYC building codes, JCAHO, NFPA and NYSDPH requirements and hospital construction procedures.

Core Skills:

Ability to plan, organize, coordinate the engineering and design and construction aspects of multiple complex projects.Ability to interpret, understand and analyze construction documents, contract documents and other technical reports and specifications.Information management skills to communicate, explain, interpret share and/or present information to employees and management staff at MSKCC and appropriate external contracts.Financial management skills to review and present project budgets and to analyze financial data and information on all aspects of construction management.Administrative skills required include attention to detail, time management, information processing, ability to plan and organize meetings, maintain files, manage & direct departmental resources, mange outsourced consulting and management.

Additional Information:

This role is based at MSK’s 633 Third Avenue location but will require travel to main hospital and other sites in Manhattan as well as regional sites in NJ, Long Island & Westchester.Schedule: Hybrid, flexibility to be onsite for collaborative meetings as needed.Reporting to the VP, Design & Construction

Pay Range: $193,800 - $329,500
