Director, Global IP Risk Management Counsel

Applied Materials has an exciting opportunity for an experienced attorney to join our world class Global Litigation & Compliance team. This role will report to our IP risk management lead within Global Litigation and be a key member of a high impact team that investigates and solves complex intellectual property problems, driving integrated value protection strategy to collaborative solutions. This team member will collaborate closely with global information services, engineers, and cross-functional legal and security teams in order to advise on and navigate intellectual property and litigation risk. This team member will be expected to translate emerging risk trends and investigation outcomes into actionable insights for continuous improvements in how Applied protects its most valuable information and navigates litigation risk.  

This position will also have a hands-on-role in cross-functional strategic risk management programs with a heavy focus on intellectual property risk management, including regional risk assessments, internal intellectual property investigations, trade secret protection, insider threats, employee mobility, and competitive intelligence.  Responsibilities will include advising on and developing risk management strategy and operations, process improvements, policy compliance, supply chain audits, third-party diligence, intellectual property risk mitigation in mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures, and training and awareness.

Major Areas of Responsibility

Investigate complex intellectual property issues, with a primary focus on how information is shared and value protection, in order to identify and implement creative business enabling solutions, improvements, and mitigations, across people, process, and technology, that continuously drive to better protection of Applied’s valuable intellectual property.Be a key legal advisor for the daily management and execution of intellectual property risk management programs, including supplier IP compliance and insider risk.Counsel on intellectual property strategy, diligence, and data separation in mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures.  Create playbooks with complex intellectual property and litigation risk mitigation strategy to support commercial teams negotiating contracts and non-disclosure agreements. Be a go-to resource for intellectual property protection policies, procedures, and awareness, including developing a deep expertise in the technology platforms that Applied uses to share information internally and with partners, in order to best protect the value of the information being shared, including overseeing audits as necessary.Own global intellectual property sourcing strategy and regional risk assessments that inform where and how valuable intellectual property is best protected.Advise on the impact to intellectual property during cybersecurity or other intellectual property exfiltration incidents.

Minimum Qualifications

Juris Doctorate Degree and a minimum combination of 10-15 years of experience at a top tier law firm and in-houseBroad intellectual property experience, either transactional or litigation, and experience with a variety of commercial contractsFearless in tackling new and unforeseen issues involving the intersection of technology, business, and lawProactively identifies complex problems, thinking beyond existing solutions and frameworks and takes ownership to solve such problemsAbility to work within a multidisciplinary team handling risk management programs and global initiativesExcellent communication skills: Ability to clearly articulate and visually present complex legal issues for non-legal cross functional teams with little to no supervisionAbility to juggle a multitude of tasks and prioritize as needed, while being able to switch gears and pivot quicklyComfortable with creating processes, drafting policies, and implementing controls to manage risk across the enterpriseWilling to help where needed with a can-do attitude, all while maintaining a great sense of humorHigh capacity for complexity and ability to explain complex legal principles and distill those principles into practical training, tips, and solutionsCollaborative by nature and able to build strong partnerships

U.S. Salary Range:

$196,000.00 - $269,500.00

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.

For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
