Director, Identity Services Solutions

Position Summary:

The University of Virginia (UVA), one of the nation’s leading public institutions, seeks an experienced, dynamic, and mission-driven leader to be the next Director, Identity Services Solutions (DISS).  Reporting to the Deputy Chief Information Officer , the DISS will lead and manage the Identity and Access Management (IAM) initiatives within the central information technology services organization. This role is critical in ensuring the security, efficiency, and scalability of the university's identity services infrastructure. The Director will work closely with various stakeholders to design, implement, and maintain robust identity services solutions that meet the diverse needs of the UVA community. The complexity of this position requires strong leadership and the ability to balance the priorities with university strategies and business needs.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

Develop and implement a strategic vision for identity services solutions in alignment with the university's goals and objectives.Lead the planning, development, and execution of IAM projects, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget and aligned with IAM best practicesAdvise senior management on IAM-related risks and security posture.

Team Management:

Oversee and mentor a team of IAM professionals, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.Allocate resources effectively to meet project deadlines and operational needs.

Identity and Access Management:

Design, implement, and manage identity services solutions, including authentication, authorization, and identity lifecycle management.Ensure the integrity and security of the university's identity data.

Collaboration and Communication:

Collaborate with various university departments, including IT (Information Technology), security, and academic units, to understand and address their identity service’s needs.Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders clearly and effectively.

Policy and Compliance:

Create and execute a strategic multi-year roadmap for IAM, including governance and oversight including development and enforcement of IAM policies, procedures, and standards to ensure compliance with university regulations and industry best practices.Stay informed about the latest trends and developments in IAM and incorporate relevant innovations into the university's identity services strategy.

Vendor Management:

Manage relationships with external vendors and service providers, ensuring the delivery of high-quality IAM solutions and services.Evaluate and select IAM technologies and tools that best meet the university's requirements.

Qualifications:

Education:Bachelor’s degree required. Equivalent combination of experience, education and/or certifications may be substituted in lieu of degree.

Experience:Minimum of 5 years of directly related experience in IT required, with at least 5 years in a leadership role focused on identity and access management.Proven experience in designing and implementing IAM solutions in a complex organization.Skills:Strong knowledge of IAM concepts, technologies, and best practices.Excellent leadership, project management, and team-building skills.Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholdersAbility to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.Knowledge of Access ManagementKnowledge of SSO/Federation, MFA (Multi Factor Authentication)Knowledge of enterprise directories (Entra, LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol), Active Directory, Shibboleth, and privileged accounts etc.)Familiarity of enterprise systems (PeopleSoft, Workday, ServiceNow)Familiarity with Role Based Access Control (RBAC)Familiarity with security/compliance standards, frameworks, and concepts (NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), SOX, GDPR, Zero trust, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s DegreeMinimum of 8+ years of experience in IT, with at least 5 years in a leadership role focused on identity and access management.Knowledge of Fisher Identity Tool, Grouper Group Management Tool, Boomi integrationsCertifications such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Identity and Access Manager (CIAM), or equivalent.Experience in a higher education environment.Familiarity with regulatory requirements such as FERPA, HIPAA, and GDPR.
