We are looking for an experienced tax professional to lead indirect tax policy, planning, and controversy team, preferable with experience in US multi-jurisdictional compliance, retail tax operations, foreign GST/VAT, Health and Environmental taxes, property taxes, unclaimed property and global supply chain business planning.

As an indirect tax director, you will…

•    Policy Leadership and Planning:  Guide the team in supporting U.S. and international indirect tax policy and planning. Establish and communicate tax policies to educate and influence government lawmakers and policymakers regarding indirect and business tax regulations. Lead comprehensive tax law research and analyze the impact of legislative and regulatory changes to provide actionable insights for Operations and Compliance teams.

•    Controversy Management and Risk Mitigation:  Oversee the team in managing tax-related controversies, including those involving sales, use, GST/HST/PST, health and environmental fees, property taxes, and unclaimed property. Identify potential exposures and develop strategic solutions to minimize risks. Proactively set strategies to address emerging risks and capitalize on opportunities, ensuring the organization is well-prepared for future challenges.

•    Team Leadership and Development:  Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment within the team. Provide mentorship, guidance, and support to facilitate team members’ professional growth and skill development.

•    Technical Expertise and Communication:  Leverage deep tax technical knowledge and advanced research skills to prepare and communicate policy changes effectively. Educate internal business units and teams on new tax policies and practices, ensuring alignment and compliance across the organization.

We’d love to hear from people with:
•    12 years indirect tax experience in consulting/service provider firms and/or in large, multi-national companies in private sector 
•    Progressive experience with multi-jurisdictional indirect tax laws, rules and business application. 
•    Proven ability to research and communicate technical tax requirements clearly to non-tax colleagues in an effective manner 
•    Progressive experience managing multi-jurisdictional indirect tax functional responsibilities, issues, people, technology requirements and external resources for large company 
•    Bachelor's degree required, preferably in accounting, business or finance or other related fields 
•    JD or masters/graduate degree in tax, law, business preferred 
•    Certified Public Accountant, licensed attorney and/or Institute of Professionals in Taxation CMI certification preferred

*If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above.  For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity.  At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
